s950 in my set up

so i havent been able to use my s950 yet but i dont think itll be hard to figure out, the only thing im wondering about is how i incorporate it into my set up. i know everyones studio is different so im looking to see if anyone has a similar studio and what works for them

first off i have a 2000xl. the focal point of the studio if you will

so my set up is as follows-

XL to mixer
XL to pre amp then pre amp to turn table
XL to studio monitors and my mixer is also hooked up to my studio monitors

so thats the set up with out the 950

i know ill have the xl and 950 hooked up thru midi

and from there im stumbed, im in the frame off mind now where the xl is my focal point, but when i incorporate my 950 does it become my new center stage?

im trying to figure out if i keep the xl running to the mixer and the studio monitors?
or do i hook up the s950 and the mixer and monitors?
should i buy another TT to run to the 950?
or is there a way to hook up the TT to just the xl and still be able to 950?

i know there isnt a set way to do things, and i need to do whats comfortable for me
but i just want some helful tips and ideas for a steady workflow

plug your xl audio out into your mixer.
plug your s950 audio out also into the mixer.
plug your mixer into the studio monitors.
plug your xl midi out into the s950 midi in.

as for sampling, you can have the tt / preamp plugged into either the xl or the 950 - whichever you want to sample into.

now you can have samples on the 950 and on the xl and you can control it all with the xl. then you can also mix the two sources using the mixer.

that's basic advice but that should get you going.

well you could sample stuff into the s950 first and then samples that into your mpc... so your beat will get the sound but that's it...

-also, you could run the stereo outs and the s950 out(s) to the mixer...

-keep the turntable preamp on the xl, maybe have one side going to the s950 to sample in there and the other side to the xl..

-midi out to the s950,

okay, im startin to see something

so if i have an 8 channel mixer, i guess im out of luck huh? i gotta by a 16 channel mixer so i can monitor the 8 outputs of both samplers...and im guessing im gunna need another 8 channel compressor, cause i have a 8 channel acp88 compressor, but will i need another one, or will the sample being triggered into the xl be able to come out of the outputs of the xl?

basically my goal is to have a setup where i can turn on my gear and work without un-plugging cables and stuff, i want all my equipment to work as one machine that i dont have to do anything but make the beat

is this unrealistic?

do any of you work like this with these same samplers? or any combination of s series and mpc

if you do let me know whats good or whats bad.

You need to get a handle on the basics, so you don't need to be spoonfed instuctions every time your setup changes.
tapedeck basically spelled it out for you pretty exactly..
Your goal is not unrealistic at all, but in your position I'd get at least a 16 channel desk... always make sure you have more channels than you need, so if you add more gear you're not screwed.

8 channel compressor? .... Overkill! .. look up aux sends.. mixbuss compression etc...
... Why would you compress every channel thats like WRITING EVERYTHING IN UPPERCASE ... to get something to sound loud... have something/s quiet for contrast in your mix.

Also look up patchbays ... if you want to reroute your gear/fx chain .. it's at least less of a pain in the d*ck that way,

I'd also recommend NOT sampling from 950 into the mpc... no point (loose to much audio quality. you got the 950 for a reason surely)... just get a hXc so you can save your audio in the 950... if recall is important to you.

i would actually say forget a 16 channel mixer - you seem to be in over your head already. i highly doubt you'll use all 8 outs on both pieces of gear in a usual session.

learn what you have first and make it work - then expand.

so you could go 4 from one 4 from another. or mix (stereo) from one and 6 from another. or one mono from each. the possibilities are endless and there is no right answer.

if you really want a point a -> point b recipe then here:

xl left out into channel 1 mixer in.
s950 mono mix out (??? i dont know what these are called) into channel 2 on the mixer.
xl midi out to s950 midi in.
turntable into s950. do all your sampling there, all your sequencing in xl.
if you have samples in the xl you can still use those too.

just do that - try it - and then next time you will learn what you need more of, less of, what you like more, like less, etc etc.
but all this talking about it trying to find 'the perfect setup' is going to get you nowhere until you actually plug all the chit together and start making it work.
