so i kno firewire is twice as fast as usb, but does this matter in transferring audio or does it only make a difference in transporting video?

I'd go with firewire over usb 2.0 anyday...firewire 800 and usb 3.0 is another story

firewire is not just faster but more stable..
i have 2 audio/midi interfaces.. one a usb edirol UA25ex and one is firewire edirol FA-101..
when i use the firewire to send midi data to an analogue synth i find it significantly less glitchy/jittery and have far fewer problems with note latching.
shame laptops hardly ever come with firewire ports anymore.

usb2.0 spec'd faster than Fw400, no.
More efficient comms and stability yes, that's why it seems to be faster.
FW400 has better continuous throughput than usb2.0
USB 1.1 = 12Mbps
USB 2.0 = 480Mbps
FireWire 400 = 400Mbps
Firewire 800 = 800Mbps.

I would say, focus on the known quality of drivers from the manufacturer. Great manufacturers can make fantastic and stable USB interfaces. Manufacturers with poor programmers and QC can make horribly unstable FireWire interfaces. The same for the opposite. All things being equal, I prefer FireWire. However, it's also worth keeping in mind that USB is the more popular/available connection and FireWire is a fated spec that is being fast phased out (if not considering adapters).
