so the main problem i have when using the low end theory strictly in my mpc is that, when i copy my sample to a new program, doulbe the notes, then i apply the lpf, set it to about 10 or so (well thats what it is for my current sample) then i go back to the main part of the program mode and boost them all to level 100, problem is: i cant ever hear my bass clearly and loudly enough, (yes i usually hi pass my original sample to enable me more control of the bass, but it just doesnt work, its like ill have to normalize every sample to even get a hot enough level to hear well enough to notice.

this brings me to the resonance knob: to my understanding, all this does is increase the frequency where the filter starts to roll off, but when i turn it to close to 100% it seems to be the only way i can hear my bass at all. i cant shake the feeling that this is very wrong to apply too much resonance though.

so my question is, do you guys find yourself running into the same problem when your doing the low end theory on your mpc?

is it just because the lpf on the mp kinda sucks?

do you copy the sample you lowpass from the 'bassless' sample?

i find that lots of resonance indeed introduces bass, but if there is quite wide range in which the notes fall, some don't come through enough, and usually it sounds too boomy (not balanced, not enough sub, too much 130hz for example)

do you use envelopes on the frequency and resonance?

yeah just double exactly whats on my original sample melody track to the bass track and create a new program (from a copy of whats on my original program) in the bass track and do the lpf and resonance on everything in that program.

i havent messed with envelopes much, how do you use them when using the low end theory?

What I do when I'm doing this is removing most of the bass from the sample with my mixer EQ. Then, I record the same sample and remove most of the highs. After that, I might use the mpc filter for my bass track. This is what works the best for me.
And for the resonance, it depends but most of the time, i don't push it too hard(5 or 6 max)

do u high pass the sample b4 you have it in the mp .... ? if thats the case then your trying to add bass to something that dosnet have it ... if u take the bass out when sampling into the mp then the sound is gunna be cut off accordingly to ur eq that ur using... the resonance cant resonate a freq thats not there ... thats why ur prob gettin the 130 htz boost ....

its like trying to squeeze water out of a rock u feel me

I do the same as you do: copy the track and program for the bass.
Filter my bass program and crank up the resonance. Most of the time I set the resonance between 90 and 100. Some samples within the same program I filter harder or softer than other samples. Same for the resonance.
Since the mpc doesn't have the best filters (they are ok, not the best imo) I feel like this tecnique doesn't work with all types of samples. Also make sure you record a lot of lows if you decide to also use the sample as the (filtered) bass.

Like I said, doesnt work for every beat. But wit this beat it just worked out fine:

lots of bass in a particular band, so that it overpowers the other parts

for example, lowpassing a song to accentuate the bassline, the filter will probably end up somewhere between 90 and 200hz.

if you'd turn up the resonance, that frequency (notes) will end up much louder than the other, lower frequencies (notes)

now, acoustic bass is usually weaker in the higher notes, so this could even the sound in some recordings. but usually, i find that even moderate resonance starts to mess with the balance in the bass region

cool thanks for the replies.

no i dont use a hpf on my sample before its in the mpc, so i dont have to worry about the bass not sounding because its not there.

menco, im gonna put my headphones in and listen to your beat, im on laptop speakers right now so it wouldent help much.

i think playing with different resonances and filter levels might work pretty well, lately ive been hitting the all button and doing the same thing for every sample in the program.
