It's a clever idea, but a little excessive and unnecessary in my opinion.

The only advantage to this setup is that you don't remove the CF card from the MPC and put it into a separate CF reader in the PC when you want to change files.

That's it.

It looks like he installed a USB to IDE converter inside the MPC in series with a Compact Flash to IDE converter.

The power button on the compact flash reader toggles on/off the 5V line so it will get the power from USB when the MPC is off.

The MPC has to be turned off for the PC to mount the Compact Flash card.
The Compact Flash card has to be unmounted from the PC before the MPC can access it.

I would suspect that the PC will hang and possibly crash if it tries to access the CF card while the MPC has it mounted. And the MPC probably won't see the CF card if it's in use by the PC.

I guess once you remember the power button sequence (turn this button off, turn this one on... etc) it'll save you the amount of time to eject the Compact Flash card from the MPC and put it into the Compact Flash reader on the PC.

I think this USB mod was just done to get that "Wow" factor from people.
This USB idea is about the same as the internal HD mod for the 2KXL. I did the HD mod just to see if I could do it per Mike Goins instructions http://www.mpc2000xl.com/Internalhd.htm. It was cool at first but the only way to load/save samples from the internal HD is to load/save them on a flash card or to connect my MPC up to a computer via SCSI and load/save it that way.
Kind of a hassle but it was for that "Wow" factor.
