If I record into my MPC 1000 at 16/44.1 (as this is the only resolution available), should I keep my DAW session at the same resolution for printing from the MPC? I don't think there would be any logical benefit recording into the DAW at a higher resolution than what is available on the MPC (i.e from 16 bit to 24 bit).

Also, is dithering necessary at 16 bit sessions before the final bounce out?

while you may not get better results tracking out mpc at 24bits, there might be other elements you end up bringing inside your DAW that can benefit from higher res imo

No. If you're looking for a more defined picture of whatever you're shooting for, it would make more sense to record your material in high def rather than not doing so.

Dither is mainly recommended when there is a change in bit length, for example bouncing down from 24 bit to 16 bit. if you are staying at the same resolution or going from 16 to 24 bit, you don't need to dither.

No. If you're looking for a more defined picture of whatever you're shooting for, it would make more sense to record your material in high def rather than not doing so.

Also because the files are being physically tracked out it makes sense to go higher. If he was internally recording the main out and dragging the 16 bit files into his DAW it would make less sense.

some people already basicly said this but heres my 2 cents

i record everything @ a higher samp rate and bit depth usualy (88.2 24bit)because i feel and actualy hear the difference. even when recording my beats from the mp! ...call me crazy but i do!

yea the sample rate and bit depth is 44.1 16bit when its in the MPC. The sound is digitaly Recorded in the mp but its coming out of the mp analog to your interface which is an analog preamp that converts and records the data to digital..... ANY time you have to go threw a d-a or d-a conversion you degrade the quality. so i double the original samp rate to ensure its getting a closer image of the original sound ... thats just my theory/experience and its been workin for me

You are far from crazy sir. Analog or Digital (signal to noise ratio or more bits to render the data), more headroom gives you more space to capture a better signal.

I'm actually of the mindset from having a MPC 4000 and using a lot of 24/96khz samples in the computer that the extra headroom even helps when your trying to do grimey sounds. You just always have more control with the higher bit rates. Even if the end product is dithered to 16 bit (99.9% the case) it still helps to start with the best signal you can get.
