problem loading my zip disk

basically it's decided to stop working and i know this is what they do but was wondering if my problem was common with some kind of cure at all.

when trying to load it, it reads scsi 5 and in type ??

i've tried unplugging, different zips but get the same problem

im not sure if this could have caused it but i turned off my mpc while it was re-sampling earlier with the zip disk plugged in

any help would be appreciated

making sure temrinization is on and scsi 5.
i've waited till the zip drive goes to sleep before loading

Check out if the SCSI fuse is blown, I had that problem on my 2k classic. It seems to work fine even without the fuse but 1 out of 10 attempts to save/load over SCSI will go wrong if the fuse is blown.

Turn on the MPC without any SCSI connections, hit shift 3 for the disk screen, select SCSI 5. If this causes the machine to freeze you have a blown SCSI fuse. at least thats true for the 2k classic, but I assume its the same for the XL.

When working with SCSI:
#1 rule... FIRST turn on external SCSI device, then turn on host device (Sampler/Keyboard).
#2 rule... FIRST turn off host device (Sampler/keyboard), then turn off external SCSI device.

I tried that and it doesn't freeze. When I plug it in and do it it gives me a load of question marks.

Problem is I don't have any other means of testing whether the zip disk works

Yeah when I got it I didn't realise you had to do that(pretty stupid)

But that could be a big part of it

And the zip disks are formatted?

I haven't tried reformatting them but I brought them 2nd hand so I assumed they were and have been using them

Is has those question marks because it can't read the data (meaning a disk format it cannot understand) can you reformat the disk with the MPC and then have it read it? Just because they might already be formmated dosnt mean they are formatted to work with the MPC.

Could it be you're using 250mb disks with a 100 mb drive? / Vice versa

It's a 250 drive and i've been using 250 disks but also 100's sometimes

The disks were working fine for about 2 months

It would be a lot easier if I had something to attach the drive to other than the mpc just to get a clearer picture of whats not working

The floppy disk drive still works perfectly if this is any help

Hmm well on my external Iomega drive there's a switch that will allow me to change its Id from 5 to 6? Might help. But to be honest all this stuff is why I just downgraded to an older OS9 machine with scsi so I can do a lot of management on the computer instead of in the more limited MPC.

you can't run it at 6

i tested out the cable and disks in another driver on a pc and both worked fine.

i don't know if maybe i've jogged a setting on the mpc or something

or the driver is just fuct

no worries got it working

turns out 2 of the entrances on the mpc for the scsi cable were bent

pushed them back and the 2 bent pins in the cable. works perfectly
