In trim mode, you can press pad 6 to play, and 7 to play reverse. As it plays, the playhead moves.

There should be a way to set the start and end positions to the current playhead location, without disrupting playback. Either with dedicated pads, or by holding shift and pressing a pad for setting start, and another for setting end.

It should also work in chop mode, for the selected region.

Additionally in chop mode, the DIVIDE function should divide at the current playhead location while it's playing. Then you can start chopping without regions, start playing, and press DIVIDE right when you want to chop a region.

In non-destructive chop mode, you don't need to divide evenly, so you should be able to start playback, press something for making a new chop starting at the current playhead location, and pressing it again to set the end point for that chop.

This would allow you to trim and chop in 1 pass by listening to the sound and watching the waveform, then using the manual number changing if you need to refine it more precisely in case you get clicks or missed part of the sound.

well thats not that intersting for me. I have been using many types of samplers for yers and the play head/marker thing is no big deal at all. If i want to start it from a different point i use the start point. thats what i do. Chop wise I am happy with it. It s like meh to me all that stuff. so i do not see it as a bug really, just how it is and it does not stop me from making stuff at all.

The MPC should be designed to maximize direct muscle interfacing, because if it's just going to be a computer you have to cursor around you're better off on a PC. It should be like an instrument, where you do the minimal amount of thinking, and can just feel your way around, while also being able to set precise numbers when necessary.

If you record a long audio file, and want to quickly chop it, but can't use even slicing, and auto doesn't work, then what is better, being able to hit play, and hit the pad along with the sounds, like an actual muscle interaction, like playing an actual instrument, or going through each chop region and manually setting start/end?

I can tell you have not used many rack samplers then :lol: non issue here for me. I use my ears and I think. so it means that it does not become an issue at all for me. its nit picking to me. I have not read any where it says things hae to be a certain way either. I mean I get what you say but in the bigger scheme of things if it really bugs you that much then you would use computer. I think it is just a waste is all. Nothing personall, just saying that as a user it is never been a concern and has in no way stopped me choppin or getting the precision needed so far. There is no set way here, we are balancing limited CPU with realtime GUI. Its a trade off in that respect i think, so another reason not to sweat it to me. Sure I could be wrong here, but to me it seems that way, so would not consider it important.

use NDC is the best option here, again I have never had this so called problem you seem to experience. you will get better at it over time and look at what every one does around here, they have no probs chopping, just cos the little cursor is not perfect.

You're a programmer then. That's fine. Do that, but I don't want to.

I want to interact with the sound as natural as possible, with the least amount of work. I want to have the waveform as a hologram in the air that I can see and just reach out and karate chop that sucka. I want to dance around and have music just flow out without being confined to sit and calculate, cranking some dial to tediously set some number.

Drop in a sound, hit play, hit the pad in rhythm, boom I have a sliced up sample, so the chunks can be triggered on their own. That is how to flow. If I have to go through clicking cursor in all these patterns to keep moving the selected field from the Chop value to the Start / End one, zooming so it gives higher resolution, hitting pad to find where it's at, turning dial to adjust, hitting pad again, over and over for every chunk? No. That's not ideal. I want to ninja chop.

o your a tripper jamon. yah i get what ya saying, but really, for me its great to play. just forget your preconceptions and loose your self in it more maybe. Actually you can do what you request - it is numeric input via the pads. jokes aside, you will get quicker chopping and setting loop points. Its like the other post about the other extra Q-link sliders i do not have on the 1000 and that was ok, but i can do that buy just zooming and hitting the two different pads to switch from end and start point adjustment. It is very quick. seconds for me. So you must be 'the workflow', bend like a reed there ninja. Get the :idea: ?
:arrow: here Would solve most your probs if you go trim mode and turn on PgmMode [F1] of a new program that is made from a NDC chop. You get to see every NDC chop selected as you play the pads and if you have start or end point selected, you can still change the chop/pad selected in realtime as you change end/start points. Do it and you will find it is what you are probably missing here. It is very fun and quick way to. It does not set in stone your chop as it is NDC. meaning you are can change any chops start and end point easily afterwards, and if you hit shift you can extract to new sample. That will make your chopping better IMO, and save any need to have the slice. Because this way you use pads to control your chop choice and the data wheel/qlink slider for end/start point as you play. Just add more chops in NDC as well for the extra chops that dividing creates. Its great this way as well as you can do this when you are zoomed right in to the wave form. Hit another pad and instantly be transported to that part of the sample with that NDC chop number. They can be anywhere in the sample to. It can be a good idea to copy NDC sample and make another program when you have it sorted. just because you can get lost in the million variations available.
No I am not a programmer, but do know a bit about it though as I do know some. I do know it takes time to do your chops pro. thats how it is, the art and all that.

i know i posted this exact request here previously about a year ago. it seems a no-brainer to me: just hit a pad as the sample plays back to set slice points. quickest & easiest way to chop a sample, especially if you are going to end up with different sized chops.

i obviously cosign on this request and think it is worth emailing JJ about.

Basically your idea is to be able to set various points manually, on the fly while playing back a sample? Is that correct?

In that case I say:

Bigtime!

For some reason it's very rare with audio editing software/hardware being so interactive. JJ OS is more interactive than most so contrary to what other say here I believe Jamon's idea fits very well in the JJ OS scheme of things.

However; since JJ OS is pretty squeezed in right now there's always a risk he'd have to sacrifice some other functionality to implement this and I'm not sure I'd like to lose other functions.

EDIT: I would gladly lose the loop record mode for this functionality. i never use it and since it's extremely limited I'd rather use an external looper (like Boss RE20) for that.
