this is definitely rolling out in an interesting way. I know two people who preordered in June from the same retailers, that never got a shipping notice, and call MF/GC and they say none is in stock, while people who preordered last month, already have theirs.

:hmmm:

dorsey wrote:Well 64 bit is very much needed for logic. Big sessions need to run in 64 bit or you run out of ram very quickly. And running the Ren under the 32bit bridge causes crashes and also, put the ram limitation back on the ren as a plug in....

So are you saying prior to 64 bit, you couldn't run big sessions in Logic? What is considered a big session?

So say I want to run Logic in 32 bit and use the Ren, what size project could I create (I have 8 GB Ram installed on my Mac)?

A 32bit app can only access around 4GB of RAM, give or take. A 64bit app can utilize upwards of 128GB of RAM and above, in theory.

On both Window's and Mac's?

And if you are stuck with a measly 4GB of Ram, how does that equate to a Logic project? 64 Tracks? 128 tracks? How many native plugins?

Just to say you can't load large projects in 32 bit applications is misleading without some specifics. Not too long ago, there were no 64 bit apps and people have been creating 'big' sessions.

Note - this is not a defense for not releasing a 64 bit Akai app. I am sure it is on the horizon. This information is for potential MPC Ren users to understand any of its limitations.

Yes, it affects both Windows and OSX. However, 64bit versions of either OS will be able to access more than the 4GB that the 32bit app is limited to, for other things. This will make things more efficient still because that unused RAM can still be used to carry the load of the OS and other apps outside of the 32bit app. This is not the case with 32bit versions of the OSes though, which can only access 4GB period and will use some of it for itself regardless of the limitations of the app.

How it affects Logic will depend on many variables. For example, if a person only has 4GB total in their system then that's actually more like 2GB usable by Logic since modern 64bit OSes will require at least half of the 4GB for itself. It also depends on the types of plug-ins. Plug-ins are usually CPU intensive as opposed to RAM intensive but some plug-ins, namely instruments, may easily fill up the RAM if you're running something using samples. Even then, plug-ins with libraries may differ drastically still depending on if it's using disk streaming or loading completely in RAM, using something like the Kontakt Memory server or VEPro server and so on.

Also, disk speed, splitting up tasks over many disks versus using a single disk for everything can effect things like track count, especially when it comes to how many audio tracks you can run. It's hard to tell what the limitations will equate to on any given system.

True, people get by with 32bit fine and have for years. I think the need for 64bit hosts and plug-ins coincides with people now using large libraries and their DAW moving to 64bit. Traditionally, to do what we're now becoming able to do now with 64bit apps people would chain together multiple computers to do.

Well said !!
Yea 64 bit for now days plug in load is a must , I have a template that opens with a lot of stuff already set to go , it won't even open in 32 bit. But I do run a few old plugs on the bridge , they cause crashes often though

My questions were not exactly answered. 64 bit apps have not been around that long and individuals are still running 32 apps with huge (100 track projects). You guys are implying you can't but don't offer any real specifics of what you can or can't do.

So if you have your 64 bit Logic (on a system with 16 GB Ram) and you open up a 32 bit plugin like the Ren (UAD plugins are only 32 bit as well)....does that mean you get 4 GB of Ram for the Ren and 12 GB or more for Logic?

This is an educational moment for you to share your knowledge. I rarely use DAWs. I have Logic Studio and recently purchased Pro Tools 10 specifically for the Ren. Plus, I just downloaded Cubase 6.5 demo.

Incorrect. I didn't imply anything. Everything I've typed thus far has been factual, is well known and can easily be researched by those who are so inclined.

I actually did answer all of your questions, you've just posed a new one. To answer your new question though. A 32bit plug-in will still be restricted to the 4GB limit of any 32bit app. This will not affect the addressable RAM of the 64bit host, which can still access more than 4GB.

Each user will have different needs I am logic user but I'm not a professional producer. I have a 2008 iMac 2.8 Ghz with 4GB which I use I my production. Though I plan to buy a new iMac 3.0 i7 with 8GB and hopefully with logic 10 which it the reasoning for my upgrade. In my production I have elected to use 32bit because of the limitation of my Korg Leagacy plugins. Even though there are 32bit /64bit wrappers the sound isn't quite the same. So I continue using 32bit even though 64bit has been in logic since 2010 I believe.

My point it how my ominsphere, kontakt, maschine, spark, fabfilter, and other assorted plugins I have in my meager setup work fine now in 32bit and I have been planning to
buy Ren since Jan announcement. Now yes I wish to have a 64bit total system and it will make Ren future future but my workflow comes first.

But to each his own and like most of my plugins a timely update can come but the Korg line is a long time coming!
