Ren vs JJOS vs MPC 3000/60 [Vintage sound shootout]

this is the original sound file which was processed/sampled with the following gear:

mpc ren´s vintage modes (60, 3000 & 1200), mpc 2500 using the jjosxl bit converter, mpc 60 and mpc 3000.

after the poll is over i will disclose the secret...

Maybe it's the headphones I'm using, but they all sound pretty much the same to me

using reference monitors and headphones i do hear differences.

remember that with more files stacked the differences will be much more obvious. so maybe we can do a similar test using 4-5 tracks (e.g. a drumset) in the future.

Basically they are all extremely similar but not all the same(some to me sound exactly the same) and I am listening on HS80s.

I will listen again later...I will not vote yet.

I noticed that the timeing was different on some of them. The metronome drops at different a time in the sample....closer or farther away from the last (3rd) bass hit.

'A' is right on it, and 'B' is next in proximity but the others are very close but hit prior to the kick, it's almost undetectable.

I think the newer beat makers and producers mystify what it is these older machines are supposed to sound like.

There are differences, some more obvious than others depending on what was sampled, but most of the differences in sound texture that people like when u listen to, say DJ Premier, aren't only because he's using an mpc 60. There are things done to the foundation of that texture to create that sound. Imagine if all you had to do to sound like Premier was get an mpc 60 ...or to sound like Pete, get an SP.

This isn't directed to anyone specifically. I hope this audio demonstration clears up what the differences are.

What makes it hard for me is the sample itself. Its a dubstep type beat with really not much to go on dynamically.

This test would of been much more effective imo with a soul funk style drum loop.

I agree. What is sampled, means a lot.
But with as many people asking about this, shout out to him for doing this.

Yes, I mos def agree. Thats the main reason why I wasnt gonna be picky and took what we got.

I guess I really cant write the Ren V-Mode off yet till we get some more audio samples.

Ndeed Hellfire. And it's frequency curve was different from machines with the same specs as well. There were a lot of factors involved.

the original sample and the ones that are processed using the ren were provided by user runningone. so i took those and added the other files with the help of fellow forum members.

since only few people own the ren i thought let´s do it to show you guys what the hype is all about instead of waiting for other ren users to supply us with a dusty break.

WOW! The results are crazy...I won't say what clips I am speaking of so that others have a fair shot.

But I picked two of them that I liked the best. We could only vote on one however.

After I selected my vote...the result was a split between the two beats that I had originally chose. It was cool to see that everyone was in agreement about what sounded best.

Now I am really curious as to what those clips were.


[EDIT: I may have been mistaken about the split, some did vote for other clips. For the moment however, the majority of votes were for the two I thought were the best.]

C. got my vote

C sounded the worst, so that must be JJ OS bit convert.

E sounded the best at the time, but B is similar.

None of this matters much.
