Is that a base drum loop or sequence, and then he is playing a sample split amongst the 16 pads?

Chopped a break into 16 regions, assigned each slice to a pad. Pretty fundamental to MPC workflow, most MPCs will even set up the chopped program for you so the pads are already assigned.

Thanks. I thought it was more involved then that because when he hits the pads in reverse order, the drums didn't sound any different [to me].

The samples on each pad are the same, he's just reversing the order in which the pads are played. Most producers then start randomising the order of playback until they hit on something that works really well.

the sounds dont actually play in "reverse", just the order in which the hits are played are changed up.
