i think about the old days and get kind of mad.........wondering how they do it............ok......a sp 1200 minimal sampling time but how did pete rock fit all those samples on it for the songs on "soul survivor".......and how did dre fit all those samples for "efil4zaggin".........any sampler for that matter.......what about rza for songs on "cuban linx" havoc for hell on earth and infamous mostly 1.44mb of data......sequences and samples........my question is how do you do it with (only if you do it with 1.44mb of space).....said albums or songs on album will be remembered 4ever and it is kind of like blueprint for ppl who wanna bring the grime grime back.........help!

Well I think RZA and Havoc use the ASR which I think has 16mb, and Dre used keys and not just samples on EFIL4ZAGGIN. As far as the SP goes, a lot of producer record their samples pitched up to save space and then pitch them down to fit the beat. Don't get frustrated, Practice.

Just because they use those limited machines doesn't mean that their drum machines were responsible for all of the sound produced. Sure, they may have used the SP-1200 to create the drum track.. that's nothing more than a kick, snare, and hi-hat, but they may have the machine midi'd up to a secondary sampler and module(s) triggering other sounds.

In their early days both Havoc and RZA used the Ensoniq EPS. That maxes out at 2mb. Fine chopping and keeping everything mono uses less memory. Havoc's beats are pretty damn simple for the most part.. take Shook Ones Pt 2 for example, one or two bar loop, that alarm sound from Quincy Jones, drums and bass. Not much. If the EPS is like the ASR, you can save a sound across multiple disks as well.

I guess the same for the SP1200, I couldn't deal with 10 seconds well.. I guess I did when I first got my MPC and i could make simple beats.

What you can do is this:
Pitch your samples up on your turntable when you sample them. Then pitch them down again after you've sampled them.

yeah I meant sp1200, plenty of old articles on the web where hank shocklee goes over their methods. Dust Bros used to use a few sp1200s hooked up too I seem to recall..

dude rza says he used the asr-10 on every wu-tang album up to Wu tang 4ever.
