hahaha, i pack lite man. 2 midi chords and a snake cable.

i love the 60, but i like doing whole beats on just the MPC, so the lack of filters and sample time is a limitation i cant work with, i dont want to have to fire up two rack samplers and the mpc, & load who knows how many discs just to a 4 minute banger.

yeah, all my rack samplers are scsi to zip so it aint no thang over here, I have almost every jack on the back of the mpc plugged in, so that kinda pic aint happinin over here.

you dont sample records mac?

By elmacaco Sun Nov 07, 2004 12:54 am
Nah man, just nokia ring tones.

Of course I sample records, but unlike the cats who say they don't use samples and then fire up motif's and tritons that are full of samples anyway, I actually create my sounds on various synths and lay it in with samples. Not that that makes me better than anyone, I just hate when cats try to use the "no samples" thing as a badge of honor, when they are just letting others pick the samples for them. It's like being a graffitti writer but only using watercolors on a sketchpad.

Hell yeah I sample from records, but I rarely make compositions based only on layered samples. I tend to grab a sample that inspires me and lay down drums bass and synths, and possibly other samples if I have them handy.

I have been meaning to just sit with the 60 and the stacks that are next to it and just sample stuff to make one song. I tend to sample everything samplable then pick out stuff to compose later.

Anyone notice in the editorial of the new scratch mag the guy says something like "sure we can sit and talk synths with just blaze, but he isn't going to tell you what presets to use" Presets? that's disgusting, I have more respect for people making pause tapes than someone just using a synths presets.

Not to disrespect anyone, but I think its fun to make a totally vinyl sampled beat. Sure it may not sound as good as songs with synths and stuff mixed in, but I only have mpcs and nothing else. I already chop super good but Im very interested in seeing how well I can become with very limited sample time and no wave editing in the trim screen.

I love sample based music, I actually prefer it in hip hop for sure. I just don't make music that way, I dislike when people dis it when they are really only using samples themselves.

hahaha. u misunderstood what i was saying.

like your more of a sound designer cat, take a hit from a record manipluate it, etc, use it like a rom from a motif on your sampler, sequece from the 60.

i meant for straight chopping something on just the MPC and calling it a day, the 60 wont cut it for me.

By elmacaco Sun Nov 07, 2004 5:33 am
eh not really, I can do harcore sound design from samples or synths, but I rarely go to extremes in sample manipulation, like, you can tell it's a snare, or a violin, or whatever most of the time.

yeah, if you use it by itself the 60 seems very limited, lots of people have continued regardless, but that's them.
the 60 was never intended to be a standalone, but it can. it was meant to control a whole studio, which it does very well. The 3000 is of the same ilk, although it is better equiped to go at it alone (I would say any mpc rarely goes it alone) but something like the sp 505 runs circles around it as a standalone sampler, it all depends what and how much you need or want.

Maybe it wasnt intended for standalone use, but Shadow made Entroducing on a 60II with nothing else but an Adat and 1200 and I got to say that is quite a album. So I guess it is what you want to do with it and what your capable of, hiphop or not. =-)

By elmacaco Sun Nov 07, 2004 9:29 pm
yeah, like I said, It sure can be used for standalone, but it's strength it being the center of a large midi set up (hence Midi Production Center.)

I'm not saying that's the right way to use it, sometimes I come off like I'm correcting people when I'm not trying to, so sorry if that's the case here.

I'm gonna try to just use records in a track sampled only on the 60, see how that goes. I really resist pigeon holes, those of you that have heard some of my tracks can attest. I'm not the hardcore sample only user, or the hardcore analog synth head, or the huge anti preset guy, I try different things and use what I have around me like everyone else.

a multitrack adat.

oh yeah, whats your setup now mac. your using the s5000?

By elmacaco Sun Nov 07, 2004 11:22 pm
I got a 6000 and an emax, I got the 6 because I like to tap out records when I sample, but when I use samples from it in a song I really don't need the capacity, I could use the emax and mpc for all sample duties, but it is just easy to sample everything from several records into the 6000, then grab a sample or two from it as needed. I don't use it in every track, or really tap it to its fullest cuz I don't have room on my mixer to use the separate outs, but one day I'll have the channels. I have been using the emax more and more, but it is nice to have the 6000's capacity so I don't have to think what sample goes with which in a program.

There are stereo two track DATs.

Anyways point i was makin is people ride Shadows jock cause he did the first joint with the 60, when what he was doing aint nothing if you just layer up your tracks, when i first started doing music, thats what we would do, lay down a drum loop on 1 track then go back and lay down the samples manually.
