Hi,
Im currently working on a project on my MPC 1000
it involves 1 kick, 1 snare, 1 hh, 1 crash, 1 miscelanous piu piu type of sounds, and my sample spread over 16 pads. All of em are on mono; the hh and the kick have reverb.

Im trying to add some sax on there but the sample cuts after like 1 second of playing. im trying to understand why; sounds like ive reached my max polyphony but am i just not using 6 channels (or w.e they are called) currently?

500 has 16 max for stereo samples but 32 max for mono.

Your six samples are overlapping mate, coz they are longer then periods you play them. You will find explanation in Program chapter of basic manual (voice overlap). I start usally with all sounds set to MONOphonic overlap, and than sometimes POLY only when there is need for that. When there are few tracks in play there is little chance you will hear the difference but this conserve whole polyphony.
