Can iPad be treated as a multi timbral sound source?

strange question - may seem obvious....

can u "close" or "minimize" the app on the ipad and still use it? i dont get how you are using more than one synth midi'd to your setup with the iPad at the same time.. no resampling.. nothing.. and where does the audio come out of? headphone jack on iPad?

im just confused but i keep seeing more and more people using iPads in their setup

Yes, apps that support Audio Backgrounding is similar to mininmizing a window. The app is still responsive in that state and if it supports coremid with virtual midi implemented properly, it can be triggered by other apps via midi while in a Backgrounding state.

Audio can come through the headphone jack or out a audio interface connected to the iPads 30 pin dock connector via a USB connection with the CCK (Camera Connection Kit) .

The running of Audio Backgrounding is about to get way sicker. Audiobus has been approved by Apple. This app will allow other apps that add compatibility with it to be strung together in a signal chain. For example, Run a sequence from one app, use another app for it's FX, and sample it or effect the sound further in a third app.

Yep! Audiobus will also allow you to use a Recording app like Auria to record other audio related apps while audio back grounding. Sick!

I rarely get excited by iOS updates/etc but the audiobus approval is pretty fckn cool, it basically makes your iPad a modular enviorment - let's hope the app Dev's see it that way too.
