Sample Editing is an essential part of samplers in my opinion. But I have yet to purchase a sampler that does everything I like. So these are the sample editing features I would like to see in the MPC Ren:

1. Waveform Editing. The Fantom G has two waveform views. The top, smaller view displays a static overview of the entire sample; it will invert the color of the region set by the sample start/end points. The lower, larger view is used to zoom in/out. When zoomed all the way in, it will display the waveform of the entire sample. When zoomed out, it will show a small, specific region of a sample based upon whether you are editing the sample start/end point. A playhead marker is a must have for me.

2. Sample processing. All the standard processing functions should be included such as Discard, Extract, Delete, Silence, Normalize, Reverse, Fade In/Out, etc. But I would also like to see Time stretching, Pitch shifting, Crossfade looping, Resampling w/effects, Bit/Sample rate convert, Chopping/Slicing, BPM detect, etc.

3. Program mode. I would like to see some sort of program mode within Sample Editing. In Program Mode, you can assign/edit sounds on the pads. So if I strike Pad1, the sample assigned to that pad will be displayed in the waveform view ready for editing. Strike Pad2 and the sample assigned to that pad will be ready for editing. Let not forget the same level of function for key group programs.

4. Chopping/Slicing. The first MPC with slicing was the 2000XL if memory serves me correctly. Chopping Recycle styled and Equal Regions are obviously must haves. Slices should auto map and audition from the pads or external MIDI controller. A Scissors tool would be nice for quick manually slicing of a sample. It would really be sweet if I could slice a sample with the Scissors tool and drag-n-drop this sample to a pad. While legacy MPCs and other popular samplers limit the number of regions you can slice a sample into, the Ren should not be limited in this regard. Generating a MIDI sequence to playback these slices has already been confirmed in the Ren.

5. Loop. Forward, Reverse, Xfade, and alternating looping would be a nice touch. Also, I would add the ability to have up to 4 different loop points within a sample.

6. Zoom. Zooming In/Out of sample or sliced regions is a must have feature.

7. Time stretching/Pitch Shifting. Realtime processing should finally be within the reach of an MPC. I am talking beyond the JJ OS or MV. I am talking adding Warp markers DAW style and having samples auto time stretch to fit a sequence.

8. Grid. I would like to see a sort of sequencer grid over layed over the sample. Time signature, Bars, and Tempo should be adjustable params. This would give you a visualization of how a audio phrase would fit within a sequence.

9. Undo/redo. Add these functions to reverse destructive sample editing modifications you've made.

10. Streaming samples from hard disk.

all of those i'd like, but specifically and in order of importance.

1. add/remove slices
2. a better way to zoom on samples. Ideally, a hardware button assigned to zooming on both the hardware and the software, but i'll even take a shortcut key (perhaps command + [ or ] like pro tools...?) Anything other than have to get the mouse...go down to the right corner, and move that zoom bar.
3. Playhead marker

Wow now that needs to be worked on!

You can just press undo if you don't like the results.

With destructive edits you should be given the option to overwrite or create a new sample. As you know, it's a nice addition to the 4K even if 75% of the time you overwrite.

Personally, there are functions that should have a higher priority than that one. The addition or omission of that function will not impact sales.

I would like to see functions never before seen in an MPC before.

The basics should be covered first.

+1

once the basics are covered, then we can move on to the WOW factors.

It depends on what those basics are. I would much rather see them add functions that a user would use 75% of the time...not 25% of the time when there are numerous ways to do produce the same end result.

Edit - I just spent time editing on the Ren and the 4000. Huge difference in work flow. The Ren applies immediate processing. The 4000 always has a popup menu asking what you want to do.

For me...this is a huge buzz kill. The 4000 doesn't have an UNDO function so perhaps it needs this. The Ren does have an undo so you can always revert back to the original sample with the push of a button. While there is some nice things the 4000 has, this is not one of them. Maschine also has the same immediacy as the Ren. I am sure this would annoy its users as well.

just curious - seems appropriate to this thread - can you edit a sample (truncate, start/loop point adjust, etc) while the sequencer is running?

thank you

It shouldn't come down to a choice between basic functionality or new features. The one entails workflow refinements and the other adds creative options. They should be added in tandem.

Of course you can. The only thing you can't do with the sequencer running as of OS1 is save/load.

thanks - i dont get the 'of course' part because is there any other mpc that can do this?

my experience is with xl and very very limited jjosxl.

can you do it with the 4000? like actually adjust a start point as the sequence is running?

anyway thats cool if you can.
i think separating the 'sample edit' and 'program params' into two different sections has always been silly - barring basic truncation. the whole point of RAM is that its dynamic and so to have to set in stone something like sample start seems sort of backwards to me.
