Right now I'm a bit impartial but do think it has the potential to be a really useful service, especially if the various software devs corroborate. If they can provide syndicated emails or feeds that are context sensitive to each user's plug-ins in one single locations instead of having to prod through newsletters and such or keep track of what has and has not been downloaded/updated in a user control panel, I may be interested. That is if it doesn't pose any security risks or impose arcane privacy policies.

It stands to be a massive time saver or a complete waste of time depending on how it's implemented. We'll see in 2013.

that sounds like those apps that scan your system to install or update all the drivers you require for your hardware... it can be useful for a system upon fresh install but I still dont think I quite trust their opinion of what needs to be installed. I believe they typically tend to connect with a central database for drivers to get the drivers required (ie: they have a hell of a collection) .. also, i believe they are not too bad with the order of which drivers need to be installed.. I forget the name of the application I tested out but this site reminds me of that.

Interesting. I'm not sure how it will be done but I'm not letting anything auto-install on my computers for sure, especially not something third-party and so general. That's like asking for bugs.

I think it would be interesting though if it was something like a centralized tracking service where you can go to one place to get notifications or receive applicable details for your specific products, especially if via an app or such. From there maybe you can see a list of changes in change logs, download, re-download, check installed/downloaded versions across your computers based on what you've downloaded, skip and mark as "downloaded" updates for your products. It would be like RSS feeds or aggregate email for your plug-ins, for lack of a better description. Something like that could quash the need for constant emails, all of the proprietary updaters and having to go and check which versions of software you're using and keeping up with updates in the current convoluted manner. Completely utilitarian in nature. I doubt if the devs will play along though. I'm probably being a little too generous with my expectations though.

I mean essentially it will have a database of users and what products they bought and might create some sort of idea of what they might buy in the future... I mean obviously companies will have an idea about what products they made that people have... but maybe not about what other manufacturer's products they own.

Absolutely possible. That's what I meant by imposing "arcane privacy policies". A lot of companies are farming client data and selling census info, I'd believe. I think Facebook and Google do the shit for sure. If it's something that's disclosed, it will probably be the tipping point for a lot of people to avoid the service. We'll probably have to wait and see. It's an interesting prospect though, the concept but it probably won't come into fruition like I'm imagining it anyway.
