ASR-10

I'm thinking about buying on of these.

I've found one with 16mb and scsi port.

Is it worth investing in, like how prone are they to braking as repair would seem to be tricky and expensive

also this runs at 120v, would it be safe to convert it to an english voltage?

How much is it? Just remember that you are dealing with an older sampler with older technology.
Test out everything to make sure it works from checking the floppy drive, the keys, back panel ports/connections, buttons/sliders and especially the screen.

You can use a step down transformer (220VAC to 120VAC) on the ASR. I had to do this also when I had my 120VAC powered ASR in England.

As you're in the uk/europe keep an eye out on ebay.de or ebay.co.uk
You will find ASR10s come up the odd time, most often on ebay.de lately.
Prices are usually lower if you get them here, taking postage into account.. esp. on the kb version.
Unless you know some tricks, your country will also screw you on import duty from the US.

Also try the classifieds here and gearslutz classifieds..
If you're patient you should get one for <400€ on ebay or above.

Keep in mind the asr has overheating issues, if you don't use it for more than 1 or 2 hours at a time it might be ok to use without a fan mod.. At least that's the case for me so far.

By the way unless you plan to drive it, it won't "brake"

Here is a fan mod on an ASR-10 by Corvid. It looks bloody fkn awful but I guess it does the job of keeping the ASR cool.

Found one in my area for 500. Same specs as the one on eBay.

Nah I won't be moving it at all and yeah saw that thing with overheating, so just don't use for long periods until fan mod is on

So they are not bad for breaking down? As I've read so many mixed reviews, people seem to swear by them or curse them down

If you treat them well they should last, they did use cheap caps in the psu, but they're easy to replace...
Mine have not been replaced in my eps/eps16/asr10 ... and all still running good all the same.

The data sliders also tend to break.. but I can give you a part number on those, less than 4€ to replace if you solder yourself.

If you use zip drives you might also get p*ssed off when your data gets corrupted.. So I'd recommend a card reader solution.

That mod is a bad hack job, I'd get tech to do a clean job on it unless you want to halve the value of your asr..

...By the way some Asr10s are fruity/have been abused, and crash alot.. Something to watch out for. Mine only ever crashed once so far..and it was really hot when it did.
So anyway, what people say about them 'always crashing' is not the rule.. especially if you get the fan mod done.. and the caps and all the rest are ok.

Are you set on the keyboard version? There's always the rack version and the two ASR-X models to look for as well.

Cheaper than Armens, but then who isn't? LOL
