2kXL crackle and dead

bought off ebay. bare minimum spec and i havent installed anything either.

powered on for first time - LCD and lights come on, crackling sound from the power supply corner of the unit. dead.

try again - same again

try for third time - nothing. and nothing from now on


opened up and fuse appears to be fine and no signs of damage to any power supply boards(doesnt really mean much though eh?)

only concern is the top board which hosts the buttons and data dial looks like its sort of burnt in some way? or victim of acid. its brown with white outline. trying to get a loan of a camera to upload pics of this.

ive searched other threads but none shed much light.

any ideas?

is it possible that some moisture got in there?

the cardboard box and paper it was wrapped in show no signs of moisture at all.

ive just replaced the fuse there and nothing's changed.

fuse was loose, fitted proper now

power came on, but struggled to come to life with a couple of blinks on the LCD and the crackley electricity noise from the power board area of the unit even after it was lifeless

so i turned it off for now

there might be a short or a blown component in the power supply maybe? I would not risk anything further until you sort that out. I mean, something had to cause that to happen.

sigh, yeah

just going to have to wait till ive moved and order both the internal board and PSU from mpcstuff.com

that board is toast man.

all the ics look like they are slowly exploding.

was this sold as a clean working mpc?

If you plan on keeping it buy some electrical cleaner disconnect the damaged boards and try cleaning all the white corrosion off and give it another try.

Looks like water/moisture damage to me.

yeah, the seller insists it was working and described it as in perfect working order

think ill email these pics off to ebay?

whatever the cause (ceo might be more right), those boards are nasty. i would not in good faith sell that without providing pictures and at a rock bottom 'as is' price.

if thats not what was sold, i would try to return it. i would try to deal directly with the seller first because i imagine going through ebay officially takes a while.

but im no ebay expert.

Yep. Like Tapedeck said try to reach out, but if he acts funny about it go straight to PayPal and file a claim. Hopefully you paid with a credit card and have double the protection.

I wouldn't even email him pics showing that you opened it. Just say the unit was not as described. Done deal.

He's doing bad business selling that grimy ass jawn.

@Tapedeck I was just assuming it was water damage from what I've seen in the past due to the white stains and such. But you may also be correct. I heard of leaking caps but not IC's though. Didn't google it but I will.

the only reason i say that is because it looks like it happens around each ic - and it looks a bit like when a battery goes bad.

whatever it is it's nasty.

not the nastiest mpc i've seen though - whatever happened to that 60 somebody posted up about a year ago?

WTF???!!!!! that board is jacked up! clean up the corrosion and see if it works. If it does work, see about getting a partial refund.

the outside is alright, just dirty on the underside from having sat on tables or something i suppose

i emailed forat and somebody got back to me saying it looks like moisture damage
