So how many of you ACTUALLY dig?

not many, if any.

how many people here still dig for vinyl / dig thru crates for breaks / bass lines etc?

and i dont mean digging through soul blogs or what not for mp3 or wavs to chop, and i dont mean digging through youtube (how people call that digging is beyond me) i mean dirty hands, sitting on the ground rummaging through dirty ass vinyl just to find a sample?

dont ya feel dirty chopping mp3's and copping rips off the net? almost like **** a fat chick, cos you think its fun but you never gunna tell your mates!

I still dig... I dont sit on the floor though... I have a 5x5 vinyl shelf filled with stuff I picked up and I randomly grab a stack and start sampling. sometimes if I find myself in front of a stack of records for sale (pawn shops, yard sales, the video store up the road has a shelf, etc...) I will go through the stack for something that looks interesting and maybe there is a sample. I try to avoid stuff I think may be known or popular if I have the choice.

I've been digging/collecting ever since 1984 and got a massive record collection to prove it. Since I got stationed out here in Las Vegas, there ain't shit out here. I've hit up every (and I do mean every) thrift store and pawn shop out here. All the record stores are either closed up or are asking for fking ridiculous azz prices for records.
Now I got to resort to eBay and Discogs.

word, i feel you on being isolated, i live in a pretty small town at the moment, i have ONE shop i can buy from, and we have nothing new.

i make the effort to hit garage sales and old ladys who are selling the collection, though, and just hooked a dude who does diggin in the US.

i also buy shit off ebay and gumtree (australian version of craigslist) but i usually do that if im looking for something in particular and i cant find it diggin.

That would be a step up from some FL dudes I've met. These guys grab the Lex Luger wanna be trash kit and sure as hell don't even know who Skull Snaps are. If I said "Clap your hands to what he's doing..." They would be like But yeah either way is wack.

To the question, I have a decent amount of stuff here that I don't go out and dig much. I'm currently in my home town after many years in NorCal and I really miss having like a dozen spots to dig. Where I'm at now (Buffalo) is more like what you described peepingtom and what Juke mentioned. There's one shop with a lot of dope stuff, but the lady knows they're gems and it's book prices and up. You see sealed Kudu and Flying Dutchman joints but you have to pay.

Maybe I'll go digging today. I pass Rick James' grave on the way to the 2 shops, should be a good luck talisman

man it's one of my favourite pastimes, having the day off and spending it skulking round town digging... As i have said before tho, i am a straight up charity shop digger, there are officially zero (none) record shops in my city. The only place you can buy wax is in the charity shops (preloved goodness).

Hell yeah i dig records! Had about 2'000 LPs at some point and reduced it to about 500 now, but they are all dope to me... always on the lookout for something new...

Nowadays i prefer a chair or couch, but in the beginning i was literally sitting on the floor digging through my records...

I've been making sample-based music since the mid 90s, but only in the last few years thought "**** it!" and started digging for records and sampling whatever comes my way.

It's reinvigorated my interest in sampling and music in general because I'm hearing such a diverse range of stuff.

Not at all mate, I do dig. I'm not on it every day but once a month I go and drop £15-£20 on records from charity shops.

I meant this Q gets asked probably once every quarter and it's boring now.

i cant help but dig - if there's a crate of records in a new place, i'm drawn to it like a moth to light.

i don't dig on ebay digging cause it feels too easy - like a magic digging request machine - unless maybe yer buying lots.

i love turning it over to fate and just letting the records i am supposed to find come to me.
it can be very spiritual.

I was digging with my grandma before I understood what "digging" really was and since she passed away I still do it more for the memory than I do for the sampling factor, I've heard music that most ppl will never know about (not referring to cats on the forum, I mean the everyday person that listens to whatever is on the radio etc). But honestly its getting harder, the garage sales and thrift stores here all have the same records I've seen in the past ten years, and I always wanted to backpack across Europe and dig along the way, until then I will sample any way I can get the source I'm after, which at the moment is vintage film noir and OST's from Italy and such, so if I can't find the vinyl I will sample from a cd or whatever. Lets be honest if you dig for years you start running into the same damn records that either you or everyone and their mother have sampled, the record may be "rare" but been over used, it is 2012.
