Is Step Edit the only way to edit recorded real time events other than playing in real time.

say i have recorded Q1 controlling just the pitch of pad A1, but have also recorded the tune of pad A3 changing.. If i go to Step edit i can highlight 'real time' and see both of them, but is three a way to see and edit just A1. like in grid edit in any way?

and ideally is there a way to interpolate between start and end values of these events. as it is possible to select multiple with shift+updown in step edit, so if the fileds could be narrowed down to show all of the same kind of events on just one pad say, it would be awesome if in 'edit' menu there was an 'interpolate values' option to blend start and end

Yes > Up the top in step sequence window you can make it show only the relevant data, say note or real time.
Default setting is ALL EVENTS. set it to NOTES, then press left cursor to highlight ALL, then change it to select your chosen pad or MIDI note depending on tracks status.
And use the hold feature to highlight and then it stays highlighted and does not scroll. Well it is a bit buggy here and can jump round a bit, but it works. Just highlight a note and hit hold. You can still move cursor when in held mode, while playing and then change data in sequencer .So highlight LPF and change filter of a sample or choose other settings.

What do you mean interpolate it. ITs in ticks, what is the problem here? D: 18 is the note duration. ergo that means it ends after 18 ticks at 96 PPQN. Did you try and use shift in the sequence window. Hold is more useful I think you will find here.
So above will help you see better in sequence window.

yeah - i guess im specifically talking about 'real time' events only, as they dont seem to have a decay option - all they have (at least all i can find) is a value placed every 2 ticks (I guess that depends on quantize settings while recording). So interpolate here im meaning selecting an entire range of these values and then it changes the middle values to evenly blend between start and end values....like a tracker.

as an example - what is the best way to go about manually editing a one bar smooth pitch drop from 0 to (as an example) -92 on a specific pad. where at 1:1:00 its 0 and 1:4:95 its -92 and every tick in between is evenly valued for a smooth pitch drop?

Err ok so its drum program only here, right. For pitch shift you could use pitch envelope, but of course the a pitch bend wheel on a synth or controller will do better via midi. Even though it is midi info the MPC samples respond to it. So for pitch bend, I use that. You have to make track go from drum to midi and go back again, just to edit it in step edit control data view. You know the view I mean? shows pitch bend info? so here you can draw the info in by hand or realtime, and fix it.I been doing the same with bass hit drops, like you hear a lot in modern breakbeats. You can zoom right in. But for smooth pitch shifts it is surprising how little data is needed. I found like 8 events in one bar was enough and real smoooooth.
Ah I see said the blind man, interpolation. yes I get you. Look you need to think about ranges maybe and use the functions in edit sequence window. So set duration of whole 4 bars or what ever, get it even, then set duration for a range, then set it again for another range inside that range. Its the closet i can come up with that will do this. You know what I mean. It can not interpolate, but it can set duration as a percentage. that is very useful with range. Use sample end point on qlink slider as well

1. change track type to MIDI (can change from DRUM to MIDI & back again without problems so don't worry about that).

2. goto GRID EDIT & press SHIFT + F1

3. read this: http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/os2xl/grid_midi3.htm
(what you want is about halfway down the page).

Awesome. Cheers for the good instructions there Bliprock and Sooty. Some methods there I wasn't aware of.

when i use this process (pitch bend) for example. it applies to the whole track not just specific pad. so i have to separate elements i want to automate to their own track - or is there a way to single out a specific pad within the track to draw events for?
