This is an interesting point...and I agree to some extent.... which is why anyone who samples dustry fingers or drums break comp's lost before they even started.... People need to recognize using the drums pete rock used doesn't make you hot...it makes you a follower...one wetmouth. Kanye? At least Kanye uses a sampler. 9th wonder made a living STEALING dilla's drums...and admitted it to the world. Maybe I was already biased because of the comment on stealing drums, who knows. Anyhow it was impressive how he took off so fast with what he had. He uses fruity loops, steals drums off hiphop cd's...and yet people look up to him. Amazing.

nothing if you want to be a copy... and there's nothing wrong with that. I personally try to be original, but that doesn't mean anyone else has to be!

Well by the simple fact you're labeling the snare as a "pete rock snare" you've pretty much answered your own question haven't you? Since you obviously don't know what he sampled, you label the drums as "pete rocks", which in turn become his kit...do they not?

By the fact you're saying "I'll sample a Pete Rock snare", you're also saying "I want a snare that sounds like pete rock's"... Obviously you have no idea what the original record is...so you bite him... Even if you had the original, you'd have to EQ it like he did...so it's easy to pick up on when people steal. If you had an original record he wasn't aware of, maybe he'd sample you.... You don't own the drum kit, but there are thousands of breaks out there on vinyl... and if you need dusty fingers to hold your hand and guide you... That's fine...you'll just sound the same as all the other people who have dustry fingers....

When the whatnauts was used the first time...everyone was shook. The same with bob azam, and power of zues. They made the beats. They were the first to rock them and the unique sounds... but hey...who wants to be unique right? Maybe ethically it's ok...but from a consumer perspective I ain't gonna bother listening to your shit if you're biting...
