Anyone have experience with Wave General Midi Sounds for MPC

Hi,

I have asked my friend, who says it is possible and that people do this.

I was looking to find samples in wave format, for the general midi GM package of a hundred or so sounds. I want to make a program for (1000, 2000xl, 3000, and MPC 4000) and use general midi as wave files.

I have searched the net, but I have not found much.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?!

You might struggle to find GM program's for MPC's as samplers are the antithesis to GM sound sets. But many romplers and sound modules have GM sound sets onboard, sample from one of these to create GM program's for the MPC's.

There may even be a GM program that was supplied with earlier MPC's on the factory discs. I'm sure there were some GM drums supplied with the 2000XL CDRom, but don't quote me on that!

Then you could load standard midi files on compatible MPC's for instant playback of GM tracks.

You might want to look into Extreme Sample Converter. Then take any GM sound sets you may acquire and convert them to AKP in the ESC app.

This might be handy for creating GM based drum kits.

I don't have a problem making my own programs, I just can't find the wave files of general midi files... Which I thought would not be too hard, and neither did my MPC Mentor, who thought it would be easy to find on the net...

However, I have not found any downloads for a set of general midi sounds in wave. Once in wave, I can just use my computer to make programs on a memory card, and play them in a disk.

I wouldn't say it is the antithesis of an MPC... It would be nice to have piano sounds, gm drum kit, sax, brass, orch hits and etc in the MPC, as to loop and stretch the samples. I didn't want to just sample Gm sounds as that would take forever!

You might find some GM drum programs on factory discs or floating around the Internet, but finding GM instrument programs might be a stretch too far.

A bunch of standard instrument programs will fill in for those in the GM spec. Building 128 instrument/ keygroup programs for a variety of MPC's is a large undertaking.

Get a good 'bread and butter' Sound Module or Rompler, and call it a day.

I have a couple midi box things in my studio, Midines, MSSIAH, TG-33, and SY-77, which are really cool hooked up to the mpcs via midi...

However, I love the note variation slider, which, sadly will not work with external midi sounds (to the best of my knowledge)

Hence, the wanting the wave sounds of gm, to make my own program.

no you didn't just compare GM sounds to midiness or a sy-77!!!

i mean, GM sounds suck man - unless you need them for compatibility with, you know, playing GM files, then i would suggest building up a library one at a time from high quality samples you can find for single instruments.

if you want to get into depth, grab Viena and some soundfonts and you can start ripping those.

still, i think the quality you'd get form doing it slowly, only what you need - vs finding some ready-made gm set (which wont work with the mpc anyway - youll still have to edit it) would be worth it.


ps. depending on the mpc model - you might not even gain a lot by using that note var slide. i know on xl it's volume, pitch, filter, and what, decay / attack and that's it. plus you couldn't do it for an entire program (on an xl - i think you can on jj mpcs).

Lol, I wasn't comparing them!

I was simply stating which midi devices I have, and that I trigger them from the 2kxl, and 4k...

I agree the gm sounds suck, but I thought I could mess around with them a bit...

I'll keep searching!
