MPC 1000, Speakers, Mixer and Turntable.

I have a MPC 1000 & Turntable (hooked up to phono preamp before plugged into the MPC) and I want to buy a mixer (6 channels) to EQ my samples before I record them into the MPC. and EQ my track (through the assignable outs of the MPC) before I record into my computer (through my audio interface).

My question: Would this be possible and how would I go about hooking this up?

This depends on the mixer.

Most mixers have 2 sets of outputs or an fx send channel.

So you would have the mpc outputs and the preamp plugged into mixer, and then either send 1 set of outputs or an fx send channel of the mixer to the mpc for sampling.

Do u have a specific mixer in mind?

This is my equipment at the moment:
- MPC 1000
- Reloop Turntable + Phono Pre-Amp
- iMac + Duet (Firewire Audio Interface)

- MPC Stereo Out > Duet In > iMac.
- Duet Out> Monitors.
- Turntable Out > Pre-Amp In > Pre-Amp Out > MPC 1000 Record In.

I wanna buy this mixer:

- 4 Assignable Outputs (MPC 1000) > 4 Line In(Behringer Mixer).
- Turntable Out > Pre-Amp > MPC 1000 Record In.

This is all clear.
But how would I go about hooking up the Duet?

Let's say:
- Assignable Output 1 = Kick
- Assignable Output 2 = Snare
- Assignable Output 3 = Hat
- Assignable Output 4 = Bass
I plug Assignable Outputs of the MPC 1000 into the Line In (1,2,3,4) of the Mixer, plug the Stereo out of the MPC into the Line In (5&6), plug the Input of the Duet in the Main Out of the Mixer.

I think this is the way to do it, I just need confirmation

Yep that setup works in a simple form. only downside i can see is anytime you want to use your mpc with volume your gonna have to have your computer on as the speakers are connected to your interface. and also you wont be able to eq turntable before sampling

there is another way to re-rout it so the speakers are hooked up to the mixer out, the control room of the mixer goes to the duet in and the duet out goes to one of the mixer ins - but youll have to be careful of feedback loops by muting the input/output of your duet/daw depending on what you are wanting to hear at the time but this way also allows you to sample from your duet/daw/turntable/mpc back into your mpc (you can maybe use the tape out of the mixer to the MPC record in). its a bit more complicated but allows a little more flexibility, but id start with your method and youll quickly see ways you can tweak it to suit your process.

my only advice tho would be to buy your behringer mixer second hand if you can find one in good quality - as you will most likely be wanting to sell it and move on to a bigger (more fx sends / better routing options) and better (the eq's on behringers arent the nicest in the world but they do get the job done) one once it becomes a staple in your studio.

if you can afford to spend a little bit more though id look at the mackie mixers - far nicer eq's and more headroom - buy used and its probably the same price as the behringer new

If you're getting a mixer then ditch the phono preamp.

Turntable>Mixer>MPC>Audio interface

or

Turntable>Mixer>MPC>Mixer (yes, back into the same mixer)>Audio Interface.

But not all mixers (non dj style) have a phono input though. Not sure if that turntable has a line level output.

I will buy a Mackie ProFX8 http://www.mackie.com/products/profx8/, keep the Phono-Pre-Amp because I also need to ground the turntable (I could screw the ground-cable into the mixer, but I'll just keep it this way).

Any experience with the Mixer?

nice. I use its bigger firewire brother the onyx1620i and i could not be happier with it. ive used a few behringer mixers and the sound of the mackie eq's is significantly better. the low pass filters they have on the first 4 tracks are really good and very handy.

itll sound better but you are gonna come up short in term of inputs

with that mixer i would use the

tape out>mpc record in (turn input monitor off in your mpc to avoid a feedback loop)
(i was going to say use mon/fx sends) but the mon is essentially a pre fader send and and the fx is a post fader send - i couldnt see anything in the manual about being able to convert them over to be a stereo fx send (some mackies allow for switches/internal mods to tweak their functionality)
usb<>computer
speakers on the main out

only thing though is the usb connection only carries the main master track if your ok with that - not individual tracks like a proper audio interface.

im probably thinking about it too much youll be able to make it work
