Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

hey all, apologies if im postin a bit much lately.
anyway to get down to business, ive just started a degree in audio recording tech' and over the next three years il be learning max msp and will have the oppurtunity to develop some of my own standalone software and learn theh electrical processes within hardware, as a result, im wondering what u guys would have added to the 2k if it was ur project? ofcourse the software that i develop will be a simple standalone pc application (although my lecturer hinted at possibilities of an android compatible software package) which will probably accept one audio input and potentially some midi connectivity (based on the words of my lecturer). im just lookin for ideas as i plan to base my package on my mpc so it will most likely be some kind of effects processor or something based on the needs of 2k users. i will inform u that it will be a LONG TIME before i post any interesting results as i have no background in this side of the industry but id appreciate any ideas from those of you who know what ur doin or simply if ur fantasizing about what could have been.

as i havent (yet) got the knowledge or experience to do this it would be foolish of me to state that i intend to create device x or y but im hoping that i will be able to, in due time create something that we will all find useful.

so... my ideas so far (juvenile or difficult as they may sound to those of you with experience): some sort of gated white noise generator that it is opened and closed in a rhythmic way based on the audio input or a simple synth that is triggered via midi from the mpc but is also gated by the mpc's output, frankly i dont know whats possible and i guess thats one of the points of this thread, thanks

yea i think you have a long way to go - it is good to prototype in software first.

the things i always wish for an my xl is
- the ability to do everything while the sequencer is running - sample, trim, save, load, etc.
- remove the 8char limit on filenames
- beefed up program edit with different filter types, and params like start / end / loop adjustable here
- some sort of modulation matrix for program params
- better way to transpose drum tracks
- program level parameters (filter entire program, etc)
- real time filter (option to how it is now)

really just the basics - i dont care for fx and the latest beat repeaters or whatever. just a solid grip on the absolute basics.

have fun

aftertouch ... you can see the after touch readings in the diagnostics screen (shift + 7 mixer, then open window key, then shift + 0, then F2 for PAD) but the only thing you can do with it is velocity variation on the note repeat feature. it would kick so much ass if the pads could send polypressure out of the MIDI ports.

yea yea i know - always considered that! i just love the xl too much.

i didnt think you could still do alot while running the seq and if the start / end / loop were adjustable in realtime / from the program menu.

The XL is a great machine, but the 4K will essentially do most of what you listed and more.

In Trim you can adjust the start/end/loop points while the sequencer plays. In the load menu you can't audition sounds with the sequencer running, but your pads will play the active program while you search. In other words, you could manually trigger your sample while also auditioning samples from your hard drive at the same time and they will overlap.

yeah, that is the only thing I can think of as well... and it would be cool if it had a Q adjustment for that and the lpf.

I used to have a MPC 1000, and one thing I especially noticed was that you arent able to "mute groups" and not playing the sequence once your in sample mode. of course, I can use my mixertable for that but It would be an awesome thing tho!

there's actually a way to get hi pass and bandpass filter settings on 2k classic. you can use a computer editor to make a copy of a sound, and then invert it. When these two sounds are triggered together, it should make no sound at all. Then if you change the filter frequency of just the inverted sound, it is high pass filter. It's amazing how well this works, its not a trick to get something that sort of sounds like high pass filter, it IS high pass filter! Still, I have to agree it would be a lot nicer if it could be done on the machine itself without wasting pad assignments

^ yeah but if I did that I would just open the sound on the computer and HPF it honestly. I know you can still tweak in the box with the phase technique, but I think the main thing for me is not having to leave my machine.

A 24db LPF would be also be dope, and of course a full ADSR envelope on each pad. I would also say a rudimentary piano roll/grid view would be tight. But I feel like if I throw anymore ideas out I'll just be coming up with JJOS for the classic

agreed completely! 2k is a great box on its own. for anyone that needs these extra features from the sampler portion, you can just add a rack sampler(racks are so cheap these days!)

^ yeah, first of all... i'm not a fan of phase cancellation techniques. Second, as mentioned... I would use a filter on the computer if I used a computer for fixing the samples.. not that i'm against it, it's just the hpf in the mpc would be convenient. Lastly, I have the eb16, I could use the eq in that to sort of high pass...

thanks for droppin the phase technique, i always knew the theory behind it but never actually thought of that! just to reiterate i am making software for use on a PC! i will not be developing anythin for use ON the 2k, i am making it FOR the 2k. just like a peice of software with the features that people may have wanted on the mpc so that u can get an idea of ur targeted sound before tracking into a DAW. i wish i could do somethin for the 2k but as my lecturer has informed me it will require a completely different set of skills and principles and is not within the syllabus of my course so it wouldnt even be in my best interest even if it was potentially possible, thanks for the responses so far
