Strictly Vinyl

if u can master how to chop and mix/equalize breaks you will sound 1000x better than sumone who uses kits, idk why people use kits. way too boring and fake sounding

besides that, i use vinyl mostly. ill download a bunch of breaks and use them too cause i don't have too many breaks on vinyl

For me it's not so much breaks vs kits. Both are great weapons in your arsenal I wouldnt give up one for the other....

I don't really use a lot of breaks , i sample mostly single drum hits from vinyl(like an isolated snare or kick...). I sample breaks too, but the problem i have with them is that most of the time you won't have a pure kick, there's always a hi hat on top of it. And if the break is fast, your snares and hats won't have a long tail.
And i find kits very useful for layering, cause if you sample strictly from vinyl, there's a lot of sounds that are very hard to find(tamborine, shaker,claps...)

Use a gate, and that way you can isolate the Kick more. Using a Low Pass Filter helps as well. As of Using Snares with no tail, the best way to do it is use reverb.

I didn't know about the gate. i use low pass on my kicks too, but in my opinion you need to layer it with another kick otherwie the kick sounds muffled.

i used to sample from everything when i first started

now i'm deep in the game and i try to use mostly vinyl

sounds the best imo

Its a technique that used when they got a live drummer banging on all of the drums, your going to get bleed from the other instruments regardless but the use of a Gate allows you to minimize the bleed as much as possible, you might not be able to get rid of all of it but its definitely going to be better then having the whole hihat hit you in the face. Definitely use kits for layering.

yeh, apart from the one shots i bought to layer sampled drums, its all from wax apart from the odd synth....


I had to buy clean kits, layering dusty drums is a headache if your only using other dusty drums........IMO anyway.

how many of you and doing things like gating (pre-produciton) shiz before you make a beat? or you all going straight from wax?
