Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By jmd2 Wed Oct 10, 2012 4:27 am
yo i got my mpc 2000 and since then i havent been able to figure out how to take out some hissing noise that occupies it while in sample mode.
i disconnected the record in cables and it still had it.
any ideas what it might be?
i got a m-audio fast track pro, hosa cables, regular mixer & turntable connected to it.

How high is your volume set on your record input on the MPC? If its a hiss then that sounds like something's volume is to low and your compensating somewhere later on in the signal chain by turning the volume up which would raise the level of noise in the background. If its a buzzing then it's electrical.

i have the signal on all the way on my fast track pro, could that be it?

no. since you said that the hiss is there without the cables too this is obviously not the problem. You havn't said what your rec gain is set to. I think its like m56p87 said. Your rec gain is too high and your output setting of the MPC is set to +12dB (MIXER -> SETUP -> Master Level)

If its not like that, the input tsage of your MPC might have a real problem
How do the sample sound beside the hiss?

peace

the rec gain is halfway & master level is set to +6.
the samples sound great except that hissing noise just makes it hard to make the beat sound good.
so its the mpc?

Yeah maybe. I usually have my level set at 0db (+6db is literally doubling the perceived volume, 12db is 200%). I just sent a Korg Monotribe through my XL (functionally the same as your 2000 for the issue at hand), and had no hiss no matter how hard I pushed the levels.

damn man i have it at 0db and theres still a hiss.
im going w my 2000 being the problem.

I got the same problem kinda, I can hear hissing when I have nothing plugged into the input on my mpc 2000 while in record sample mode. kinda pissing me off, I like to have a clean signal. Yet I dont understand why I would have hissing when I got no input running into the mpc.

How much of a hiss are we talking? Jmd2 did you compensate for turning off the +6 gain by turning up the physical input gain knob? Sounds like you need to boost your level somehow before it hits the MPC. Anything after you sample and your just raising the volume of sed noise.

If I turn my record input knob near maximum on my 2000 classic I can hear a hiss, that's it. Are you guys getting it lower? Taking into account any boost of the signal later on?

input gain knob on what?
my m-audio signal is all the way up.
my mpc'c master volume knob is halfway.
rec gain is not even on the third dot.
my turntable/mixer thats connect to my mp has its gain halfway up.
with all that in that position i still hear a hiss. a big one.
i might think its also something to do with my hosa cables.

He must mean the record gain knob on the MPC. The fast Tracks are some of the lowest volume/impedance interfaces I've ever seen. I have the Ultra one and no matter how high I turn it up it's still low. But that flaw actually should let you feed a higher gain signal into the Fast Track to compensate. (Of course not so high gain that the dB level is clipping).

Refresh my memory if you could, the hiss is present with REC mode engaged on the MPC with nothing plugged in and no sample inside the MPC playing? I ask because you've mentioned a mixer is in the signal path. Many mixers do not have a low enough noise floor and are prone to producing hiss.

Yeah I am fairly certain this has todo with your signal chain and not a broken/malfunctioning MPC. Why dont you try running something else into the MPC directly and see where the noise is then? Don't have any experience with audio interfaces so can't help you there.

yeah the hissing is present when the mp is in sample mode.
and when i remove the record in cables from my mp that connects to the turntable the hissing is still present.
and also when i record into my program hissing is present.

Hmm,
Like I said, I get a Hiss as well (with nothing plugged in) but that's when I've driven my record input (red knob). With it above 80% of the way. But it sounds like if you boosted your signal before you sampled into the machine it would solve the problem, mabye a cheap preamp for now?
As far as fixing the problem itself, I don't really know enough about what's going on in your machine to fully diagnose the problem. Mabye someone else can chime in if they had the same problem.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses btw, appreciate it muchly, I realised that the record gain on the mpc is not meant to be pushed so hard and that I was just being picky with the analogue inputs, I suppose I shouldnt really try my hardest to fault a machine that is over a decade old haha.
