Sounds like your tact switch is going then the actual mode button itself. Depending if you want a short term fix then use Deoxit to lube the switch, it won't cure the problem but it will help till it dies completely. The long term fix is to replace the standard tact switches with ALPS-SKHHAKA010 tact switches, more can be found on this thread

Hope that helps

i dont think that the problem is the tact switch... it was already solder and its looks good ... what about the jjos?

now what in the world has possessed you to think that an OS update would suddenly make your MODE button stop working?

it's the tact switch, dummy!!!

The issue with the tact switches are inside the switch itself. Its the internal copper surface of the switches reacting with the air. They will look 100% fine from the outside.

But if you are fairly sure its a JJOS issue then you could always try loading in the Akai OS and seeing if the problem stops with that OS.

But from your description it sounds exactly what would happen when a tact switch starts failing.

you didn't need to take the entire thing apart...

all you need to do is get some contact cleaner [DeOxit is the most commonly mentioned product on these forums], lift the button that isn't responding, and spray the tact switch with the contact cleaner.

the tact switch is the little thing under the button that goes *click* and makes the button work.

there are numerous threads about this topic on this forum.

you can put your mpc back together now...

Now that you've got your pcb ripped out. You might as well have the tact switch replaced. Deoxit will fix it in the short term but you've done the hard yards in taking out the pcb. If your not confident with electronics/soldering take it into an electrical repair person and have them do it - or just buy a new pcb from mpc stuff (it's good to have a spare on hand anyway so you never have your mpc out of action when this issue happens + spare encoder and pots)

I recommend buying about 50-100 alps skhhaka010 from mouser or element14 or Newark.com depending on where you live. (prices change significantly as you by higher numbers and can actually be cheaper to buy more) they are worth having on hand because as long as you have a mpc it's an issue you will have to deal with.

When you have them all change every single tact switch with them as they are much better than the stock akai ones and will last much longer.

Yeah the ALPS-SKHHAKA010 have a life cycle of a million compared to the shoddy Akai tacts which have a life cycle of a 100,000.

more like a cycle rating of 1
I just got 10 switches and am gonna solder them in this week. I will mod the buttons underneath a bit as well. That idea is from another thread and is worth considering I think. I am sure there is step by step guide on here somewhere isnt there? I spent some time searching but didnt see anything straight away, so cant give a link. I will take pics on desoldering and soldering the tact switches in, just in case. I spose video is the go nowadays, and a youtube clip

Did you mean this mod?

yeah something like that. Just to even out the pressure from the buttons by increasing the surface area over the tact switch. I do not think they fail from oxidation, I think they are just badly made cheap crap tact switches and that is why they fail IMO
EDIT > I meant that I was thinking of not cutting the tape as short and go between button and tact switch.

One of my Q-link After buttons died and I'd only pressed it about 20 times in 3 years. Cheap crap indeed.

I had a friend going to electronic supplies store and he asked me what switches I needed as he knows I got broken ones. I wanted his soldering iron as mine is too high wattage, but he said he would just do it himself. Well he works in avionics and I know he can solder so he did it in 10 minutes. All ten of em done. I had to take it apart and mark the ones needed replacing, and he just did it and had a coffee and that was it done. He actually did the Q-link tact switches with out removing the board, so thats pretty skilled, though a solder sucker helps a lot. Put it back together and checked it. No smoke  cool.
He replaced one instead of another, and so after those ten, I got to do the mute screen button still. Oh and I also stood on a button, and that broke it so its been super glued back together and is now drying next to me. ooooh so close yet so far.
