I kind of threw dubstep out there because its a genre I like and since all I have is a computer right now, I figured that would be a good place to start.

I eventually want to sample some old school records. My teacher used to work at a record store so he can help me find what I'm looking for. I guess I'm looking to make music like Pretty Lights. I'm obsessed with the samples and modern beats put out by Derek Smith. I have been hooked on that since taking up your precious time was released.

I'm still thinking about a MPK49 and and maybe an APC40 with ableton as my software.

See if you can find a deal on the MIDI controllers used. Then you could have a little dough left for a VST or two to complement Ableton. (You need the more expensive Live Suite to get Operator, Ableton's FM Synth and Sampler, Abletons full keygroup sampler).

a used mpc100, 2500, 2000, 2000xl...they'll all leave you with plenty of change from a thousand. a new 1000 is less than a thousand.

not when you are trying to buy gear to make dubstep and you only have a thousand bucks.... wtf can you buy for that price to get the job done? the mpc5000?

maybe the octatrack wouldn't be too bad though on second thought...

Also, you can start by having some rhythm. Bang out some patterns on a wooden table and whistle along. If you can do that, then you're on your way. And learn to strut when you walk, have a groove playing in your head and walk to it, its almost like dancing but you walk to the rhythm, wear a big hat and some bell bottoms and a cane will help you out too.

2nd hand MPC1000 + 2nd hand Nord Lead/Roland JP-8000.
If you don't need so much sampletime, maybe you could go with Yamaha RS7000 instead of MPC.
