How many beats do you make in a Sitting????

I twisted my knee pretty severely on saturday so im at home for a week. Just last week i got another crate or so from my local dig, i had been to busy to go through them thoroughly until now. Ive found many recognizable samples and thankfully a sh!t-ton of unrecognizable ones. so ive been beatin out one quality seq. a day. they need a mix for sure but the changes and programming are all there..
pretty far off topic but anybody w/ peter tosh 'steppin razor' throw it on its worth the spin..

I "could" make that many tracks a day....but is it worth it? i mean, all you gotta do is lay down a 2 bar drum loop, and a bassline and you got a track.

Its the sampling, melody, layering, digging, sound design, and arranging that make a track hot. And thats the shit that takes time....not the acutally drums and bass-thats easy.

I mean, i could see it if all you used where presets, or if you built your library so big, that yould have enough to work with.

Personally, i make a track, it leads to another track, then to another, then to one i finish in one sitting. So i make about 5 tracks, but they really are just variations, or sketches to the final one.

I got a friend who makes like 10 a day....... But they all sound similar. No matter what its good practice, but at some point you have to focus on quality not speed.

it just doesnt take me as long as it used to, to get results. I used to make a track a week, but im starting to get my shi* together and im just quicker. I just work on em till i feel there finished. Its not really a race, but if u do start trying to do one a day, u will get quicker cause u develop a system. But yeah i feel that u should just work on it till it sounds done. If that takes u a week so be it. It happens to usally take me 3 or 4 hours from start to finish. but im in the lab all day so that aint really a prob to do like 2 or 3 a day.

WOW!(Yeah-Right!) I agree with you philly stress. I think that's impossible to do. Maybe you he can make 20 beats in a day but he can't do it on a regular basis. S@*t prince can't make 20 beats a day everyday or even every other day.
I'll be honest, I'm happy if I make 3-4 songs in a week, I mean you have to get a chord progression or search for a good sample, create a dope melody, bassline, ect. and then equalize and mix everything, arrange it.
I mean, if your beat isn't complete it's just a sketch and not a song, I guess I could make 10-15 sketches a day.

but seriously il make 1-2 in a sitting every couple days. sometimes i wont even turn the mpc on for a week if im really busy. then some days i make a bunch. then there is always putting them on the computer, that takes another sitting to do a couple

I guess i'm the only one with a full time job, a wife and kids. LOL LOL
I'm lucky if i can get anything done with a wife and a kid. so mostly i just do tracks after 10pm til 1 or 2. But on the average i mostly get about 2 to 3 songs a week. and out of the 3 maybe 1 might be a keeper. But I guess the main factor would be if that was my job, as in if i got paid to do tracks I'm thinking i could do about 10 songs a month if i didn't have other things pressing for my time.

I make one beat in a sitting, concentrate on the one at a time. Sometimes I even go back to it to tweak things.... Sometimes I put in some overtime and do two in a night. So, how long are your sittings/sessions? Mine are anywhere from a half hour to three or four hours, I work on my own time I'm not punching clocks...

it all depends. sometimes 1 hr or sometimes 6 hrs. just however fast its comin along. but i really dont think a good hip hop song should take u more then 6 hrs.

i dont know how many producers have came to my studio with 4 or 8 bar loops calling them complete beats but more money for me and a co pruduction credit ive done this so much the word has gotten out and a lot of times i get hired to go to other studios to finsh and correct other people beats
a beat is not conplete till its arrange and sequence and even then most times afther u get the vocals on the track u still have to go back and make some changes especially if u made the beat without knowing how the song goes i hate that and u can diffently tell when u liston to it so most of the times i make a track i make the song up as im going and sell the track and the song and just do the right paper work

especially 9 out of ten times when u do and r&b beat before the song is written and u do the lead melody it will have to change or the key will have to change to fit the song and the way the singer is singing it or u will have a real mess own your hands

i dont sample so it takes me a liittle longer to get where im going plus i dont use just one machine so im all over da place no 15 min beats fo me plus i like to make my own sounds or tune a preset to fit the song im making i know a lot of producers that use just straight presets becase they dont take the time to learn thier equipment so i guess they can do a gang of sound a like beats a day

quality not quantity...

it's not about how many beats you make per day...what about how many QUALITY tracks you make that sound different and interesting per day?

a full track takes me AT LEAST a week to get all perfected. dunno bout yall...maybe i'm just slow.

i make one rough draft every sitting.. which has been almost daily for a few days now. using nothing but samples from random records is really time consuming but worth it.

yeah well here are a few that only took me a few hours to make.

The mixdown and recordin though will take a week. Im just mainly talking about in this thread is the pre production work. That is what these cats are talkin about in scratch. just the ideas for tracks. Or a basic structure. But honestly i dont think i have spent more then 6 hrs on a track in a very long time. I dont know if that makes me a "good" or "bad" producer but thats how i get down.

That's the kinda ish I'm working with too...

i guess a lot of it has to do with what you're using it for in final...how many of you actually lay vocals down over your own tracks? i make all the tracks for myself, so i want them to be perfect.

i feel you on the scratch idea though. i can knock out 2-5 in a day if i wanted to.
