MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

I have a sequence and want to quantize it after the fact. When I drop the note value from say 1/32 to 1/4 and hit FIX the note still plays in 1/32 even though GRID display changes to 1/4. I thought that the T.C. was supposed to be able to change the timing of recorded notes.

Adjust tc before recording, play and that's where the mpc places the note. If you want to change the note afterwards you need to move the note in grid, step edit, etc. Your understanding of tc is backwards.

Not sure about the MPC5000, but I seem to remember on the MPC4000 you could quantize previously sequenced notes by selecting the quantize field, pressing window and auditioning different quantize settings. There was an option to keep any you wished.

Page 21 MPC4000 reference manual.

Applying timing correction to an already-recorded track

You can apply timing correction to a track that has already been recorded. Executing this
operation will rewrite the timings of the note events...Move the cursor to the TC field, and press the [WINDOW] key.The Timing Correct popup window will appear.

Will the 5k do that too?

Just retread the 5k manual, bottom of page 26.
Seems like it should be possible, it's in the manual.

MMMYYYYY understanding of tc was backwards.

I've never had to use that feature, I've always manually step edited my ticks individually (coming from my asr10 way of thinking I guess)

Don't forget the top of page 27 where it says all or individual events.

SOLVED-- thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The MPC5000 can alter sequences after the fact. Here's how:
Transport must be stopped
Hit TC function button
Select Note value
Strength-- must be near 100 percent
Window-- must be near 100 percent
FIX button selection will permanently quantize. There is NO GOING BACK. Obviously, I could always go down in Note Value thereafter, but not go up. On the other hand, SWING can be readjusted to taste-- I guess because SWING is not really quantization in the pure sense of the word, but merely an instruction to modify an existing note on playback.

MY ORIGINAL MISTAKE was that I had SELECT and STRENGTH set to 0%

I keep saying I'd like to try the 5000 one day, I wont look at the manual unless I need to. These machines have always been really intuitive which is a strong selling point IMHO.

^ Every MPC has its strengths and weakness...... If you could pick one up for cheap or borrow one from a friend you would find that it's not what it has been made out to be. But you being a 4000 owner you might prefer that box...... But I recently played with a 4000 @ guitar center and it just didn't mesh well with me. ( I think it just comes down to whatever you feel more comfortable with tends to work best.)
My newly acquired SP-12 has been getting all the attention lately. It's fun making beats on such a limited machine IMHO. I love sampling into that SP :) Now if I was t working 12 hours a day I'd have more time to pla with my toys :(
