i just have some ziplock bags, gallon size, and i rubber band together all the cables i dont use.
if you have hella cables, just label a few different ziplocks trs, xlr, usb/computer, ect ect.
when you need a trs cable, just get them out of the ziplock labeled trs, and the one on top will come out easy and not be tangled with everything around it. if you need the one on the bottom, the gallon size bag isnt too big dump out.
if you have a real lot of cables, this would work great with those reusable bags that stand upright, like these

line the side of your closet with them, and when you need them, they will always stay open and be standing upright. just grab a cable thats already contained out of there.
also, ive found that a label maker works well if you are running your cables from your power strip to your gear and you have alot of similar looking ones, just make tags on both ends with what that cable is for.
if you dont have a label maker, masking tape works best, but ductape or even scotch tape would work fine just cut out little pieces, wrap them around each end and label them.
