Weird behaviour -- pads triggering data wheel???

So sometimes when I hit some pads while highlighting a value that would normally only be changed by the datawheel (Track program, filter cutoff, etc.) the value gets set to a maximum or minimum value. For instance the track program will get set to OFF or the filter cutoff will become 0 or something.

Anyone else have this? It's quite hard to reproduce consistently but it happens very very often.

you on 2xl? it is probably your qlink...set them to the middle and see if the unpredictable value is in the sixty range.

A faulty/worn data wheel can change value on the vibration of hitting the pads.

Yeah I'm on 2xl.. I'll test this out later. Is there a fix?

Does the encoder feel loose/worn ? Does it still click on rotation?
Hold or tape the wheel still and hit pads... Should improve if it is a faulty encoder.

I had the same issue with values changing whilst banging the pads. I fixed it.

The solder connecting the legs of one of the Q-link sliders to the PCB was cracked (a dry joint). Banging on the pads made the Q-link slider shake slightly and hence make value changes. I re-soldered, re-flowed the solder and boom.. fixed.

Data wheel feels fine, nothing wrong there. Didn't notice anything wrong when opening up my MPC either..

powerface, i'm pretty sure your issue is qlink related.

I would have thought the q link would be obviously damaged to cause a problem like this, given that it changes nothing unless assigned to do so (normal function)

nah, in GPE it changes whatever parameter the cursor is currently on

That is a function on the xl I have never used
well if the rotary is ok it's gotta be a faulty q link then. Or a damaged pcb.

OK, this issue stopped happening but now I have a horrible feeling my Q-link sliders are broken.. if I go into the slider screen and assign them to stuff they just don't respond at all... could they really both be broken??

possible. it's a good opportunity to learn to troubleshoot your machine.
the qlink board is not expensive and electronically it's extremely simple to repair.
if you owned a guitar, you'd expect to have to change its strings

2nd that. If they are broken its not hard to fix it

But as the problem has gotten worse since this thread started, I think you should check that the pcb itself is plugged in correctly.

I disagree with this analogy but I see your point and have no problems with opening stuff up

Ok, so I opened my MPC up and took a look at the Q-link PCB board (took the screws off so I could look at the underside too.) It all looked fine but I tightened the white plug on the bottom that takes the four cables under the chassis.

When the MPC was switched back on the sliders were working as expected. But after a day they've started messing me around again; so on the main screen for instance, hitting the pads switches between Q1 and Q2 in the bottom left. I'll tighten the white plug again and if that is the source of the issue I'll try and find a way of fixing it in place.. it might need resoldering to the PCB.
