it actually works very well to simply record the midi data from another box right into an mpc sequence via a midi cable. once i started doing this it opened up a ton of possibilities. 
that too... as long as you can manage to sync them up properly. 
its really not hard especially with quantisation - just set yer tempos to the same in the mpc and the drum machine - or slave the device via midi clock and record the pattern back into the mpc in real time, or slave the mpc to the device.
you can record the pattern into a seq that is a couple times bigger than the original pattern, so you make sure you get it all - but if you are syncing via midi clock you shouldn't have to worry about that. its always worked perfectly for me.
