DIY Drum Programming

Buggin out about my drum choices recently. I'm really not a fan of drum 'kits', maybe some kicks for layering, but usually I'll just grab a break and re-sequence. Nothing sounds better than a hard crisp break! I'm thinking it would be worth extracting each hit from a break and categorizing for future use. The only issue I see with this is original drum tempo, and tune. On the other hand, I've been watching a few videos on the subject, and this technique seems to be the norm! How many of you guys follow suit with this?

Tempo wouldn't come into it if you're extracting individual hits from the breaks. Ultimately that's the way to do though - extract the individual hits and then either build a kit just from that break, or take the individual sounds and continue processing, layering and tweaking until you've sculpted your own signature drum sounds - from which you can build entire libraries of snares, hats, kicks etc

Yes thats the way many Drumkit Packs are made. They are heavy processed drumhits from breaks.
I often find it hard to decide which way to go. either processing a drumhit to sound really fat or keep the sound natural and nearly original but on the other hand kind of thin. I didn't find a way to get both out of drumhits from breaks (there are excuses. I mean the original sound of the Impeach the president break or Synthetic substitution didn't need much processing to sound fat. I guess thats why they're still in the game after all those years and after everybody raped this break)

Yep that is the norm. Well maybe not today anymore, the norm is probably downloading drum packs from the net. But yes that is the famous technique developed by Marley Marl.

Don't worry about tune or tempo.
