Hi there

I recently bought a used MPC1000 with JJ OS2XL installed. I've left my Ableton Live setup in favour of a hardware setup consisting of an Elektron Octatrack, MPC1000, Nord Rack 3 and a Kaoss Pad Quad.

Now I've learned using the Octatrack, I'm trying to figure out my MPC, but I really don't know where to start. The manual seems pretty hard when you're on JJ os...

How would you advise me to start learing the MPC? Is there any books or tutorials covering JJ OS2XL? I only fould the "Beat Making on the MPC1000", but this only covers the free JJ OS...

Best regards Nikolaj de Haan

The 'Beat Making on the MPC1000' book will teach you a lot about using an MPC 'in general', including core MPC concepts and fundamental beat making process, but when it comes to OS specifics, all the examples will obviously be specifically for the Akai OS and the free JJOS. So there's a lot of stuff in there, but you'll have to adapt it if you are using it to learn a completely different OS.

If you're looking for more complex MIDI routing set ups as per your other posts, that isn't really covered in 'Beat Making...', as the book was written from the POV of creating beats entirely within an MPC environment.

If there's enough call for a tutorial on advanced MIDI routing, I'll definitely write one.

Okay thank you, I'll check out the 'Beat Making on the MPC1000' book and see if I can adapt the concepts to JJ OS2XL.

A MIDI routing tutorial explaining how to make the MPC work with other machines (channel routing, program change, sync, transport etc.) would be great! :D

really it's probably still worthwhile to read the standard akai os manual, as the key concepts in there are what jj is really built on.

jj just takes it to a new level and adds a lot more complexity / flexibility.

but for the key concepts, i think the standard akai manual is a good place to start.

youll be able to get the hang of it if you use that book.

i used the beat making on the mpc 500 when i first got that one, learned the basics on there, then after i sold that, i got an mpc 2500 with jjos2xl and i pretty much transitioned in a week. just looked up some basic things like where things were and stuff like that.

maybe try using the book with the akai os installed until you learn the basics, then switch over and you should be good to go.

or just use the jjos manual and youtube.

Cool, I think I'll go for the book (250 pages!) and start with the free JJ OS :)

that will be more than enough, like i said, i went from the mpc 500 book to the 2500 with the jjos 2xl, all i really had to do was look up some stuff on the jj manual and i was set. good luck :-D
