I just got an MPC 3000 and am fooling around with sequencing external hardware. Basically, I have MIDI out from the 3000, going to MIDI in for a DSI Tempest. I'm using the 3000 to sequence the Tempest sounds.

The 3000 is doing some odd things. Before I even recording, as I hit pads that trigger sounds on the Tempest, they trigger at the normal 'played' velocities, and then they'll randomly drop in volume / velocity, and stay there as I hit the pad Then out of nowhere, they'll jump back up to normal. This seems to occur randomly on all pads

I tried recording a sequence in the MPC, and despite the sequencing being quantized, the MPC seems to drop beats here and there ans stutter...Is that normal?

Judging by how the Tempest lights up on these random quieter notes, it seems it's actually receiving random lower velocities. The pads light up dim, as they would if you were to tap them lightly

I am guessing you have the 3000 on full level? in the recorded sequence.. if you check the step edit, is it actually recorded at 127? It sounds odd...

yep it's recorded at 127 in the step edit. And I'm on Full Level

I'm going to try making a sequence not using the Tempest. Just an internal one and see if I have similar results. I'll also try sequencing some different gear

yeah good idea... sometimes I get odd results sequencing external gear on the 60... because I rarely do it so sometimes I forget a detail here and there... but usually I wind up sorting it out.

well as far as I can tell, it seems to just be a Tempest thing. internal sounds worked fine, and I tried sequencing my Mopho module and it had no hiccups, or velocity funny stuff.

I suppose I'll shoot DSI an email an see what the story is there

yea my guess is the issue comes from tempest (which i also own as well as a MPC60)
tempest is still in very early beta stage, especially concerning midi.. what OS version are you using?

Would be useful if thread title was changed to MPC3000 sequencing DSI Tempest, that would help the search systems.

I'm using the latest. Whatever that is (x.1 ?)
Yeah I knew it has it's issues, but I hadn't heard about this one
