At least the hard truth is there, that Akai died years ago and Numark is just trying to reanimate a frankenstein corpse. Don't get the legacy twisted, you bought a Numark MPC :fku:

well, we just heard it from the man himself... AKAI is being run by a cheap bastard that is only in it to make a buck... even ripping off the original creators in the process... i hope roger sues akai for all they're worth... they'd be nothing without the MPC line he originally created for them.

+1

The last time I heard that classic phrase it was on CNN and Enron was the subject.

hahaha... that's funny.

p.s. we already knew numark is cheap and trying to make a buck... okay it's business, but numark is sneaky... they always have something they cut corners on in their products but you wont know right off the batt... they hide it.

Hopefully Clint will get the chance to have a proper chat over the phone. I'm sure some of the answers in this interview have been copied and pasted by Roger from other interviews.

In case you don't hang out in the 60 forum much, Coz is referring to my MPC60 book project.

Have a peep at the thread and add your 2 cents.

Interview fell short of what I was expecting, having seen it hyped up on Bboy in recent weeks. But there was a nugget of info that helps to build the picture of what went down.

Props Corry.

mr_debauch wrote:well, I dont think they are interested in innovating... they are into spending bucks in marketing, keeping manufacturing costs low, and repackaging/reusing old R&D (especially from companies they acquired) ... what innovations have alesis come up with since it was acquired by numark?

I agree. I've just finished doing a review of the Ren hardware (not software), I'll try to get the text version up this weekend while I'm editing the video. Basically while the Ren hardware itself has very good, solid build quality and the essentials are all pretty much spot on (e.g. pads, data wheel, buttons etc), there's nothing revolutionary about it, it's basically 'mildly evolutionary', which is pretty much typical of recent MPC development.

As for the design of the Ren, I'm pretty neutral in my opinion - it's not horrible, but it's not going to win any awards. It's another area where Numark need to pull their finger out.

I hear you Clint... Thanks. I had so many more questions but I had to (at Roger's Request) narrow it down to 10 questions.

I know Roger is a tough cookie from past email conversation. He doesnt really like the focus being on the Linn/Akai stuff, while his newer products get little shine.

With a lot of creative types and geniuses, their early work is impossible to surpass, and they spend the rest of their lives hoping to repeat earlier successes. Unfortunately for Linn, nothing else he's produced since the MPC3000 is likely to become a classic studio piece. He was the right person, in the right place, at the right time. 1979-1994 it was all about innovation, and he was in the thick of it along with a few others I could mention.

^ i heartly disagree.. a lot of people in this forum & other hip-hop centric places are sleeping on the Tempest but it's causing quite a stir in the edm market. it's understandable as it's an analog drum machine not a sampler. that being said, i can assure you that the features it contains as far as sequencing, build quality, layout, modulation options, synthesis, analog filters, analog compressor & distortion, the fx...it all is simply outsanding, it's really a next gen one of a kind unit. the MPC's he is right have hardly evolved from the original concept, which is why i'm excited to hear the LinnDrum II is still on the roadmap :-D

i also understand he is pissed at nukai... when you see how much their latest product is influenced by the 3000 & 60, from the design to the heavily advertised vintage mode, it's quite shocking Roger doesn't get any royalties on that... it honestly doesn't make me want to support that company despite my interest in renaissance..

yeah... fvck a company that wants to blatantly cash in on throwing the name "mpc 3000" around like it's gold [and as if their current product even had any relation to that classic piece of gear at all]... but they aren't willing to pay the creator of that machine what he is legally entitled to. "vintage mode" my ass...

Thats because Akai are merely copycats. Roger Linn is a musician and an inventor and knew what was needed. Akai just took his ideas because its what "sold" and trying to use a name (cough*MPC*cough) to sell. Sure they contacted a hundred producers to give ideas but none of them know how to program it to software. Since Numark bought Akai, every MPC they made crashed and had faulty components and parts. 1000/2500 were successful because of JJ. I could go on but yall heard it before
