"I always got the impression the mv was like a keyboard workstation's brains trapped in a drum machine's body... so while that totally works, it's nice having a little midi keyboard running into that midi input... because for key instrument patches (pianos, etc..) it's easier to play. Also the sampler is setup like it should have keys.. there is a transpose button to change the octave the pads are at... you dont need to use that with a keyboard though... you can play keys from different octaves at once that way."

Thats a damn good point right there. I love using the pads, but I have to have keys. Maybe this is why the machine apeals to me so much. The JJ os is kind of like that to me too though. Just seems like you need a keyboard to really get use of some of the features. Of course, you don't NEED one... It really is a preferance thing.
Basically, there is a learning curve, but I think it is damn well worth it. It really does become second nature after a while, though I admit when I try to use a function I havent used in a while I may freeze for a few moments. There's a moment there where you have to look at it from another angle.. Then it kind of clicks in. Once the machine makes sence to you; Then the machine becomes your instrument.

it's just, how the transpose (pad banks) is set up.. how the patch assignment looks on screen when you do chromatic assignment... how by default the ADSR has the decay set to 0 so it's like note off (you always need to hold the pad to play out the whole sample unless you increase the decay) ... this is what you would want for an instrument patch when playing it on keys for many instruments...

I am not a keys player by any means... and it still seems like one of the best additions to the MV.. IMO.

sum new stuff i found

press shift and up or down in the chopping menu to visually boost or reduce the wave.

if ur decreasing sumthin with the dec button u can make it decrease faster by pressing the inc button just after but simultaneously with the dec button, works vice versa.

lemme know if u guys know any button shortcutts

shift and buttons to make it go faster... shift and jog wheel... shift and stop for instant stop (very important) ..

when in screens like piano roll.. shift and pushing left or right zooms in and out ... also works in the drum step sequencer.. it's just odd how they did the visuals for triplets.

I forget the shortcut for forcing the machine to switch back from the VGA to the internal lcd... but that one is important.

can the mv 8k fill silence in between vocal takes so afterwards i could import the files into my DAW and they would sync up?

also, does it only accept 8 total audio tracks in any given project, or could i import more than 8 tracks of audio (from my mpc or daw) into a project and just forfeit the physical fader control on the mv?

not sure i know what you mean by silence filling..

the 8 tracks of audio are just audio style tracks... you can still put audio onto a midi track and trigger it... you would have to look into it to see if it has the type of option you need.... I didn't make much use of them myself.

I suggest checking a guy on youtube called overlor.. he has both MVs and he did some videos last year showing how he uses audio tracks for samples even because they have different options than the standard midi/program patch stuff... he also has the 2500, 2000xl, the rmx16, maschine, the ren, and who knows what else... his videos are all positive and no hating and VS garbage since he still uses every machine.

ill check those videos out for sure.

ill give you an example of filling silence:

say you record 3 verses on a track in your DAW, then after that you have 3 separate audio regions with empty space in between each verse; when you fill silence it makes the 3 separate audio tracks into one with the silence in between the verses filled. that way when you export your multitracked beat and import it into a new DAW session, all 3 verses line up perfectly with your other tracks.

here is a video example.

^ didn't know that was a needed feature for some platforms... what does that do exactly to give an advantage? I dont know if it has that, but I would guess you could add the second audio clip where ever on the timeline you wanted and you could bounce the track into a single wave file in mixdown mode if you really needed to... not sure if that exact merging feature is present.

I know you have the 8000 but on the 8800, its a dedicated button to switch from LCD to VGA. Thats the difference between the 8000 and the 8800, a few dedicated buttons like Pattern and Song and the color screen, thats about it. 1.01 OS is exactly 3.57 on the 8000 though. :D

Anyway to answer about silence filling, thats a recording technique on its own, there's hundreds of ways to do it on any machine. But on the MV, there's Track Mutes and Solo and can be edited in the Mute Control, or have a sample of nothing and throw it in the timeline or just don't play anything for a certain duration.

Merging can only be done with MIDI tracks, not audio, and must be in a timely order because then the merge will mash it all together and you'll have vocals over another.

Well, thats different from what I thought.

But once you have stuff recorded on a single track, its exported as is. So can copy and paste all you want and add stuff, it'll be that way when you export it. That feature is overkill IMO, since the verses was on a single track anyway.

^^^^ this is what i was looking for i think, so when you export it it doesnt export the separate regions as little audio files, it exports each track as a full audio file huh?

the reason i want it to do this is cause i would probably record in the mv, but take it out and mix somewhere else, so when i took it out if the 3 seperate audio regions that were on the same track got exported as 3 separate audio files, they wouldnt line up perefectly in the daw, they would just start at the beginning instead of in the place they were actually supposed to be at.

if it exports them all, it "fills in the gaps" with blank data, or silence, and thats used as a kind of placeholder to keep everything in sync with the rest of the song.

this is hella dope that the mv can do this. 8)

well the way it exports in mixdown mode has a result similar to how a daw exports to .wav ... it's one single wave file the length of the whole song.

so if you wanted to have vocals on a separate track, and each other thing separated as well... you would need to do the solo/export thing... then transfer all those files via USB to the computer.

or, you mix all those things in the box, do the mixdown with no solos... that turned the whole song into a .wav... then you have mastering mode you can go into and load up the result (or any wave file) and set up those fx (compressors and the whole 9) ... then you record it through all that stuff.... it makes a new .wav file with the result of that. You can transfer that via USB to the computer or burn it to a cd... etc.

What you can do is highlight the verse or region you want and extract it as a seperate wav or aiff file. You can extract it right on the beat, so you should be able to do this with little effort.
