anyone here use their studio skills to work with the youth

I've been working in music and art for a while with kids. I'm wondering if anyone else here does? Pass on knowledge to the next generation and also let them express themselves.

i sometimes volunteer at a youth center, helped them set up little beat production studio with another guy that donated some of his equipment including a 200xl and some cool little synth.

they also teach graffit writing, breakdancing, and dj'ing.

its pretty cool stuff to mentor youth especially through hip hop/music . i havent been down there lately though, i need to.

we were trying to set up a workshop where i could teach the kids how to use the mpc better, but it hasnt happened yet, partly because i havent been down there for awhile. need to get back into it.

kids are terrible.

This is class j. I've worked in primary schools as a TA, but nothing music related. I'm applying again this year for a PGCE, in fact it went in yesterday so fingers crossed.

You're local to the north west aren't you man? Where abouts are you teaching? What kind of facilities do you have etc...?

I work in live sound and volunteer at a church for their live sound reinforcement. I keep an open door policy as far as anyone wanting to learn how to run a mixing console, light console, etc. The biggest problem that I have faced is finding kids dedicated to actually learning something and not just showing up every now and then to turn some knobs. That is another policy that I keep: if you are not willing to show up at practice/sound check, then I cannot trust you to run the mixing board during the performance. It's a good opportunity for kids to take to get a leg up in live media which can lead to a college education as well as a good/fun job with a steady paycheck. Oh well, you can't expect too much....I know my priorities at 17 were 1. Girls, 2. Girls, 3. Wreaking Havoc at all hours of the night, 4. Music thrown in there somewhere. They will wish they had taken career choices more serious at that age, but don't we all?
