Bug reports & end-user support for Akai's MPC Software 'controllers' including the new MPC Studio 2, the MPC Touch, MPC Renaissance & original MPC Studio and MPC StudioB lack.
buyer's remorse
How about we talk buyer's remorse for Maschit users? That **** cheap piece of plastic just stopped working one day. The craftsmanship and QC is ass at NI. How about we talk about that? The hardware of the Renaissance BLOWS AWAY Maschine on ALL LEVELS. When the software gets developed a bit more, Maschit will be looked at as an entry-level toy for amateurs with no dough. :fku:

But you believe AKAI/NUMARK!

I have both MPCs so I can listen, judge, and form my own opinion.

I was hoping Tutor, Hellfire, etc would post samples...but I had to do it myself since it appears so many are 'interested' in Vintage mode....and not necessarily the truth.

In a real world test, both the Ren and the MPC 3000 sound very good...to my ears. Which sounds best is purely subjective and so far....there is no consensus on which is which in the on-going Vintage Mode Samples thread.

I'm not that concerned, but the false advertising is a concern that many people have.

My point was you should apply your reasoning to both sides!

Anything can be used to make good music, but when you are making false claims as a company that should be taken to task!

I don't have a 3000 nor access to one!

Like Hellfire, I don't have an MPC3000, so it would be fairly hard for me to do that.If you were hoping for me to contribute, you should have PM'd me to check if I had an MPC3000.

Back on track though. This topic is not about whether or not Vintage mode sounds like an MPC3000, that's covered in a separate topic or five. This is about whether akai were feeding us all marketing BS about the 'mp3000' analogue circuitry they used in the Ren - i.e. what MPC3000 circuitry exists in the Ren, is that circuitry the actual true source of the MPC3000 'sound'.

since jah has the 3000 dude should just load up the same beat in both the 3k and the ren.

record both into a daw using the outputs and post the resulting wavs unlabelled and we shall see if peeps can tel the ren from the real 3k.

and if u also have a 60 do the same.

but ok so there is not dsp chip and the emulation is taking place on the software level.

i can accpet that but are we also saying that the output on the ren are not the same as the outputs on the 3k?

thats very bad by nuakai cos the whole isea of using the same outs was to get the output sound to be even closer to the 3k

I did that already and posted the samples.

JAH wrote:I was listening to Dan speak about the MPC Ren again..watched this dozens of times (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-3ZTxgDyis). And several things stood out to me:

1. It's our mission to make sure the pads feel right
2. Creating a custom low latency USB audio driver
3. Creating a custom MIDI driver; 10x faster than standard MIDI
4. LCD data communicated using a private port; pad MIDI data won't interfere w/LCD
5. Touch sensitive Qlinks (rotary pots)
6. Making a committment to update the software, constantly add new features
7. Acknowledges JJ OS...conscious about what Akai customers like about the JJ OS

In the context of Dan's interview, he was discussing how to capture low latency with the Ren as compared to hardware MPCs. Akai's goal was sub 5 ms latency.

This statement "Creating a custom MIDI driver; 10x faster than standard MIDI"...versus your statement that boasts "ensure the tighter timing than anyone elses midi interface when triggering external midi modules and synths"....

Labcoats, is this what you meant?

These two statements are not saying the samething. Or are you referring to another interview/report?

Hey Jah,

yeah, I have picked that up wrong. Their not saying faster than anyone else, their saying 10x faster than standard - I guess. But still, if they do mean 10x faster than a standard midi USB interface then its good thing.

The thing is though - no matter how well they designed their driver the results would still be different from system to system becasue they would still have to rely on the way the USB protocol works. A well set up system should provide a pretty good midi experience sending midi to our external boxes. However, I think for me to do a test on this would be a unfair unless I could guarantee everyone I have a system setup extremely well. I cant do that so I guess it would be up to each individual to test it from themselves.

Not backing out, just being fair.

They have been very cowboy in this area. The whole soundcard deal was intended to be some kind of pacifier to suggest its a hardware MPC - of sorts - a bit insulting imho to treat us like idiots. It was added in there for nothing more than marketing and in doing so they have muddied the waters and detracted from what is actually a very good controller - software combo. Thats not to say there is no use for the soundcard. The direct turntable connection is very handy. But, as a front end for a Daw monitoring system its a non starter for most I would say.

I dont think everyone at Nukai wanted to add that soundcard in. I believe that came from the top, not the engineers. I also believe the marketing angle came from the top. Jack O Donnel has a less than stellar reputation in the industry. I think when you see a bloke such as Roger Linn going on record saying he is an unscrupulous bastard speaks volumes. From what I have read around the web I wouldnt like to work at the company. I get the impression its an oppressive environment to work in.

Best idea for Nukai would be to get rid of O Donnel, get me, Roger, a few dudes from the forum including forum owner, and a dozen hot lasses, and yeah we better include Jah and we will set about designing the perfect MPC range!!

Really? Have you seen any of the videos which show their quest to design the Ren? Akai spent alot of time consulting producers that use or have used MPCs. Because it included something you don't like or excluded something you like doesn't mean they are treating you, we, or us like idiots. Having audio I/O is a must. In fact, I wouldn't mind if it had more outputs. They did the right thing here in my book.

Phew, luckily I don't care about any of this :smoker:

Any difference in audio quality or "tone" added from an audio interface in a modern instrument like this is negligible IMHO.

There is so much more that is going to come out of my sound design and mix engineering that I could care less if something adds a tiny bit of tone or a boost or dip at some frequency, I'm just going to mix around it anyway.

This seems like a huge waste of time to care so much about this but to each their own I guess. Have fun trying to figure this out you guys

appears that akai has retracted the 'mp3000' analogue circuitry as they probably realized somebody would tear this thing apart and discover none

It can still be found :)

Akai NAMM Press Release wrote:MPC Renaissance changes the output characteristics of the sound to match that of the intended machine so users seeking that sound can easily get it. In addition, the analog output circuitry in MPC Renaissance is identical to the highly regarded MPC3000.
