I was in he market for an MFC-42 (uhh not the orange juice version  ) but they are very elusive so i ended up copping the electrix filter factory

as for comparing i have never been around an mfc in action but the filter factory may be a great alternative for anyone interested. i got it for under $100. I've used it with the mpc 5000 for a good while now. just used it last night. i've sampled thru it too. great unit.

another great purchase, man... i find myself recommending this filter on the forum every time the MFC42 topic comes up.

a cool little overlooked fact about the filter factory [and most electrix gear as well] is that the phono preamp is top-notch imo... if you bypass the filters and use it just as a preamp it sounds so damn clean compared to most DJ mixers... i've just started sampling vinyl through the filter factory instead of my dj mixer this last month and i really like how it sounds... not to mention immediate access to sampling with filters as well if needed.

Yeah man. its really dope to sample vinyl thru. this thing is pretty magical for almost anything. I ran synths thru it too. great sound and control.

there's also a smaller version called the Filter Queen which goes for even cheaper... but i'd recommend the Filter Factory as it has a better interface and can be synced via MIDI and all that good stuff. i paid $150 shipped a couple years back... $100 is a steal for a piece of gear that well-made.

very very true. most of the ones i saw at the time were about $150 but I got mine from some cat in NY who pulled out of his dungeon and thought it was worthless. He sent it to me with some nasty ass grimey towel wrapped around it. it was dirty and gross litttle unit. I cleaned it up really well and its always worked like a charm. so yeah i got a great deal but I'm due for a tetanus shot

The Filter Factory is OK (used one live once on the ouput of an analog drum brain while the sequencer rotated it thru it's filter modes on the bar, sounded awesome), but it tends to be cheaper because it has less functions than the 42 and other similar boxes such as the Mutronics Mutator or Sherman Filterbank -- the biggest being the lack of an envelope or envelope follower.

Personally I prefer to have the option of an envelope. Also never did find much use for the Electrix distortion circuit in the FF. Just didn't suit my taste in distortion.

The filter factory has an "env follow" setting that can be selected in the wave form section of the LFO. is that not the same thing?

I will tell you what I would love to get my hands on a Sherman Filterbank filter though. I've drooled over those a few times.

I've never owned a Filterbank but they are notorious for being aggressive and distorting easily.

If you've got money to burn the Ebbe Und Flut is somewhere close to the top of the pile.

A discussion about MFC filters began to get a bit jacked by my mention of the filter factory. I almost mentioned the Mode Machines Juno 106 filter there too but figured I'd start this thread

Haven't heard it but I'm sure its dope. would be a dope addition to any MPC / synth set up
