The default sounds you get when you turn it on sounds really cheesy like some of the old school drum machines. You have to program it to get that punch.

This is negative opinion based on not owning the machine, it's not helpful for anyone.

This is an opinion based on trying out the Tempest at my local dealer. I spent even more time with it because of these threads. For those interested in the Tempest, they shouldn't expect to turn it on and hear booming bass which you typically hear from a TR-808. You have to do some programming on the Tempest and not disregard it based upon some presets.

Metatron72 wrote:And Jah, I think anyone who's about to drop $2000 on an analog drum machine is not buying it for presets. You're trying to put forth some sort of caveat by stating something obvious.

You can't assume that. Plenty of forum members over the years spend $2000 plus on keyboard workstations and sound modules...and only used the presets. You have producers out there making top dollar...and only used the presets that came with their sound modules and sample libraries.

JAH wrote:Actually, I see more excitement about Roger Linn being who he is and not for the Tempest.

Look at the thread title FFS, this thread is about Roger Linn, not you and your hate of the Tempest, give it the f**k up already!

People get excited reading about Roger Linn, he is the reason we are on this forum talking s**t in the first place, we wouldn't have MPCs at all without him, all MPCs are based on his design and ideas.

Roger is a legend, the Tempest is not an MPC, you are a whining b!tch.

As usual you're missing the point. "sound modules and sample libraries" , we are not talking about that we are talking about an analog machine. Obviously presets have been used frequently in music.

The overwhelming majority of people who would buy analog are buying it because THEY WANT TO GENERATE ORIGINAL SOUNDS. So yeah I can assume this in the case of the Tempest. Which seemingly is why you have no interest in it, which you've already established. So go play with one of your myriad of samplers.

Mods, lump me in the suspect pile if you must. But these continual ridiculous statements have to be answered.

When so many people start havin the same thoughts and opinions about a certain somebody, it's time to realise that maybe they're actually right about said individual

Well then can you explain in brief detail the tests you did side by side of the two units to compare the 808 to the Tempest to come to that conclusion?

Were both units run through the same monitors?
How long did you spend programming the Tempest?

Or is it more likely, as I've already said, an opinion based on not owning a Tempest. And again I have to point out, it's a stance you're always critical of when someone has something negative to say about the Ren.

@ Meta, check out Carl Craigs Boiler Room set....

I spent hours at my local dealer which I frequent often looking for new toys that arrive in Japan. It had presets grooves ready to go. And they sound just like this:

I listened to the preset grooves, banged on the pads, twisted knobs, etc. I couldn't get it to sound anything beyond what you hear in this Tempest video. So my comments reflect my opinion not to sum up the Tempest by listening to the presets grooves or the preset sounds.

Around the internet, people are dubbing the Tempest as the new TR-808.

But you will not immediate get that sound turning it on. Without programming it, you get the equivalent of the Synsonics Drums:

LOL @ listening to the presets and twisting some knobs. So really you have no comparison at all. Yet again you're trolling a product with negative bias.

You side step every question that is put to you, and try to come back with a smart-arse reply like that?

You have no comparison to an 808 to justify any of your previous comments. You're clearly on a wind-up as usual.

Dude what is this insistence on this 808 comparison? I mean other than they are both analog and coveted by people who like analog drum boxes?

The versatility of the Tempest and it synthesis possibilities are well beyond an 808 which while a classic is rather a one trick pony. (It's a hell of a trick of course).

Again what is your point? I re-iterate other than desirability and some folks asking how it fares doing 808 styled sounds I've seen no one label this the new 808. And why would they? Get on an Acidlab Miami drum machine if you want to compare something to an 808 and have the comparison make sense.

Again what's the purpose of you pointing out the presets are pedestrian sounding on a unit that 99% of prospective buyers are looking at to program themselves?

So you found the video with the dullest sounds (which isn't even the point of the video, it's a features walk through).

Because I'm linking a video of Tempest being used as 99% of it's buyers would (i.e. not presets) you will likely feebly say I'm supporting your non existent point Jah.

yet another cheap blow at tempest... have you ever heard the factory sounds that come on most hardware MPC's? they kinda blow as well... as is the case on most instruments. most people make their own libraries/patches.. presets are usually there so you can demo the features or give you a quick starting point. obviously the quality may vary but basing your opinion on them is quite dumb..

again as an owner of Tempest and of a Roger Linn 60II (i posted pics of both my units earlier in this thread) but also of the TR-808 & TR-909 and several other analogue synths both vintage and modern, i'd like to think i'm pretty qualified to make an actual comment on the sound quality of Tempest..

first of all yes the presets suck... they were made by roger & the guys at DSi. Roger is a phenomenal engineer & designer but he's not the hippest musician, producer. since then, DSi has made a huge sound contest (with pretty cool prizes ranging from analog synth give aways to tempest mugs for every participant :smoker: ) and the turn out has elevated the sound content to a whole new level. the best sounds will soon appear on factory units.

that being said even as it is right now, Tempest has in it's digital section some 40 kits of all the classic drum machines including 808,909, LM-1, LinnDrum etc.. all courtesy of Goldbaby, the gold standard in vintage drum sounds. so it's actually mad easy to get a 808 or whatever out of it.. where it starts getting interesting is that you can then process those samples through the analog filters and complex synth & modulation engine of Tempest and twist things to next level as demonstrated here:

I simply wrote not to judge the Tempest by the presets nor any of the videos circulating. Even the videos posted in this thread can't possibly be doing it any justice. Your video is the only one that showcases its sound. All the others should be scrapped. The Carl Craig video? I guess I would have to be under the influence of narcotics to appreciate that one.

Nice of you to post pics. But it would be more interesting for your fire up the TR-808 with a drum groove and then do the same with the Tempest (since it is 'mad easy' to get an 808) and post the audio files.

AGAIN - Dude what is this insistence on this 808 comparison?

You don't want one apparently, we get it. It's prospective buyers need no "warnings" from you based on your idea that it's merit is based in aping an 808.

Carl and Roger Linn talking about drum machines is completely relevant.

The live set I posted for Metatron and anyone else who knows anything about how important Carl Craig is for not only the detroit scene, but techno as a whole.
