Because there are really nothing else to compare it to today outside of the Maschinedrum and Electribes. And it is like a modern TR-808....

I simply wrote not to judge the Tempest by the presets nor any of the videos circulating. Even the videos posted in this thread can't possibly be doing it any justice.

i knew you would single out that phrase... nice back pedaling btw, you said your opinion of it sucking was based on your demo of the presets now you're saying to not judge it by it presets.. which one is it jah?!

JAH wrote:Nice of you to post pics. But it would be more interesting for your fire up the TR-808 with a drum groove and then do the same with the Tempest (since it is 'mad easy' to get an 808) and post the audio files.

lol... right maybe i should make a poll too? such a test would be foolish.. the above video is proof you can get an 808 sound but it isn't designed to replicate the 808, the layout, voicing & sequencers are completely different.. btw why always pit one unit against the other? it's a constant battle with you... DSi never claimed it has "vintage 808 mode" btw.. Tempest is it's own hybrid instrument, it's analog side has its own flavor, and it can also get you the classic sounds or you can can mix both.. the features and real time control are also pretty unique and forward thinking.. but it's not a unit for everyone and definitely not a substitute to an MPC or even TR-x0x, which is why i own all of them..

Actually...you are way off. And you are asking a question that was answered several times already. RL delivered a drum machine when he said he was designing a sampler. He claimed it would be innovative and implied he knew what his customers wanted....but he hasn't released that product yet. With the Tempest being the result and not innovative...many forum members were let down and hardly anyone has bought it. I never said the Tempest sucked.

Why compare? That is the natural and logical thing to do when you make a purchase. Reviewers like Sound On Sound, always offer up alternative products.

again you spread misinformation.. Tempest was never supposed to be a sampler, i already explained in the previous page what happened with the development of the Linn Drum II.. as for Tempest not being innovative that is based on your ignorance and bias against it.. and as far as "hardly anyone bought it" that is again false speculation, it's one of the best sellers at DSi despite it's high price tag, and is lauded in the EDM community, however it has unsurprisingly not made much noise in the hip-hop/MPC community (although i predict this could change)

yet another blatant non-factual claim:

There’s no obvious alternative that comes to mind in pure hardware, certainly nothing that combines overkill levels of synthesis with the responsive pads and other controls Tempest provides. There are smaller, far simpler analogue drum machines from companies such as MFB in Germany and powerful digital machines such as Elektron’s Machinedrum, with Korg’s Electribes sitting somewhere in between. But none have a polyphonic synth inside, nor are they aimed quite so squarely at dynamic performance.

Machinedrum is the only thing ever released that is even close to as feature packed as the Tempest. And Tempest is digital and analog in it's oscillators and doubles as a polysynth.

Being analog and having sequencers and costing around 2g's to own one are all Tempest has in common with an 808.

And if this gets locked it's on you as usual. You make ridiculous post one after another clearly hoping to get insulted and cry foul. But aside from like 4 or 5 posters who do in fact insult you, the rest is people trying to point out the ridiculousness of a lot of your posts as well as many of them not even having a discernible point.

Believe me a 1:1 808 emulation is not the Litmus test for a box as versatile as Tempest.

Very early on (when the 2 were still concept sketches) DSI/Linn announced it would be two products. One with sampling one without. The analog one made it to market while the sampling one will be delivered at some unknown point or never. Disappointing? Sure. But you're making it like they pulled a switcheroo on you. Sorry the half of the plan that didn't interest you is what got to market. So why are you even concerned about it?

Yeah sure Jah, I'm sure SoS mag had a 808 in the sidebar and wrote eBay under it.

Note: I said a lot of the same things Daft just said, typing at the same time. Just 2 people who see this clearly I would say. Nothing either of us have said is subjective, just reporting facts.

Boomchik was hyped as an analog/digital drum machine. The design changed many times to include adding VGA monitor, USB A/B ports, etc. They claimed they were going to change the game for beat oriented music. And after several years...they just changed focused and came out with the all analog Tempest which has actual digital samples onboard.

I say it is not innovative because I can't see any innovation. Read the manual, demo'd it at my local dealer. Plus the fact that you own one and have yet to discuss innovation which proves my points.

When I say no one bought it...I am referring to this forum. $2000 is not a high price tag. Quite a few of us forum members have spent $2000-$3000 on MPCs over the past decade (some of use purchased multiple units). But hardly anyone has purchased a Tempest in the community.

And please re-read the Sound On Sound post in its entirety and my post regarding Machinedrum and Electribes. I wrote the exact something.

The hypocrisy in all of this is that quite a few of you have been on a rampage in the new MPC forums...pretty much every day for this past year. Now as soon as someone says that this new DSI product (that you favor) is a let down from all the hype...you are crying about it (and most don't even own it nor plan to buy it). Even as a type this..the same guys do what they do in the new forums.

Boomchik was a computer render and whatever Roger Linn and Dave Smith wrote on napkins drinking IPA's while kicking it. :) For several years it was just a general list of potential features and the various renders. So stop with this idea they duped us. It was a disappointment on the Linndrum II, but Tempest was not a bait and switch. Linn Drumm II was always going to be Linn's own release so it was always obvious Tempest was the definite as DSI was and is churning stuff out regularly whereas Linn is no rush as is his personality as we all know.

"When I say no one bought it...I am referring to this forum."

And what about it? A bunch of people who's main tool is sampler didn't buy an analog drum machine, that's not a real surprise. And yes $2000 is a high price tag, regardless of how many times one has shelled at that amount. So because it's a price tier that MPC owners have and would pay for an MPC, the fact they didn't pay that for a product that they didn't want in the first place proves something?

All this BS from you trying to prove some indiscernible point. You don't see what's good about Tempest for your tastes? Why talk about it then?

Go find your next random detail about something gas it up and make whatever non-point you want.

Not one person here is crying about the Tempest, it's exactly the opposite! You're the one clutching at straws to try and make a point, and as with the majority of threads you post in it's become another row which you are at the root of.

But instead of taking it on the chin that you've been caught trolling again you persist in an attempt to make other people look like they're in the wrong.

What sort of playground tactics are these really? What you're essentially saying is that you have beef with some people from the Ren forum so you're on a wind up here.

JAH you are an absolute cancer to this forum, the sooner you get banned or leave the better for the whole community. Hellfire has the Ren forum covered and then some.

I have a difference of opinion about drum machine and saw the hype for what it is. I discussed my opinion in this single thread.

But you (plural) attack a product, the individuals using it..relentlessly. And when asked not to stoop to insults, you continue to do so and then blame me for threads being closed. :?

There is still time. Delete your disparaging remarks and stick to just talking about Roger Linn, his products, his history, and agree to disagree on certain aspects.

99% of my posts are about using MPCs and not directed at any forum member personally.

What product have I attacked?

I insulted you once in a thread over two months ago. Show me where it has occurred here.

You are going to try put an ultimatum on me?

I have been talking about a Roger Linn product the whole time. :hmmm:

Obviously you are directing this at me by using the same ' (plural) ' I did.

I have never insulted you or anyone else in this thread. And have only been discussing RL and these products. Wow....how you (plural) get so worked up.

The MPC 3000 forum is ridiculous. Even as I type this, you have a 'certain individual' whose only purpose is to bring negativity to that forum. Plenty of threads where actual MPC3K users ask forum members for help. You will never find these 'certain individuals' in any of those threads. They are only interested in contributing to anything that can be perceived as negative....which was certainly not the vibe of this forum when it started.

A difference of opinion discussed properly without trying to belittle our views is fine. I will gladly talk to anyone if there's mutual respect. Unfortunately whenever people don't agree with you, you start to take the p*ss.

Secondly, I've never attacked any individual on this board for their choice of product, ever. If you're going to make an accusation, name names and give us quotes.

Don't try and threaten me JAH after you're the one who sent this thread into a spiral while the rest of us were doing exactly what you're now asking us to do.

Lastly, don't try and instigate an argument and then try to claim innocence on your part when you don't get the outcome you want.
