Hello All,

Thinking about buying the 1000. Is there anything to look out for regarding the earlier pad issue? Are some of these units still floating about the dealers?

Also, whats up with using compact flash? Is it something that Akai just haven't bothered updating over the past few years? I thought SD cards might have been the current choice with much larger scope for GB's.

Thanks

Not too sure about why Akai uses CF cards but I can tell you to try and stay away from the blue and red models. The black models were a later version and the pad issue was addressed on those. You may be able to find a blue model that has had the pads upgraded, the way to tel is if you try and move one of the pads the others should move too (all the pads are on a single sheet. The wack pads are individual so they won't move when doing the test. There's also lots of previous discussion and tips when it comes to purchasing a 1000 and what to look for. Using the search button on this forum is also highly recommended. Good luck

Plenty of early black models had the bad pad design as well, so you still have to check.

CF was more common when the 1k was released. Akai probably don't consider re-tooling for SD worth the production expense and it's doubtful they're going to produce the 1k for much longer anyway.

Now that you mention it, I do deem to recall the black models that have the black back plate were releases earlier than the ones with metal back plate. I think the ones with the black back plate still had the effed up pads.

I suppose after 10 years, something new should be on the horizon. Any clues out there to suggest Akai's intentions?

Akai has no plans because Akai is dead and has been so for awhile. Their last MPC to be released was the 4000. The 1000 was left part finished and thrown onto the market by thier crooked parent company Grande Holdings, hence the bad pads and other problems. They then sold the rights over to InMusic, who just props up the name for the sake of advertising thier cheap computer interfaces. They tried making some bad stand alone simulated MPC videogames but they ended up with so much egg on thier face I would tend to doubt they'll try it again.

BTW I wouldn't go by anybody's quicky formula to spot the bad pads on the black units (back plates, serial numbers etc) as these methods have proved unreliable. You really have to perform a physical check to know for sure -- BUT no "new" 1000 should have the old pads, unless it's one of those "new old stock" deals.

 What's your method, short of dismantling in the store or at a sellers house (if they let you)? How do you identify a "new" 1000?

Well if you can take it apart that's one way to be absolutley sure, but barring that, the corner pad test jiggle works as long as you understand what you are looking for. If you've ever used previous or subsequent MPC models the difference may be obvious just by trying to play on them -- the feel just completely sux by comparison, assuming they still work at all.

By "new" I mean exactly that -- bought new from a reputable retail store who got them direct from the factory. The "new" Akai only sold them with the bad pads till the old Grande Holdings part stock (which they knew was bad) ran out. They only use the new pads now.

Going for a used 1000 seems to make sense at the moment, although the 1000 still seems like a useful tool to get while they are still in production.

Does anyone know of any alternatives to the 1000? considering its form factor, midi capabilities and live playability? would prefer 24bit too, though I reckon some tinkering on the master channel with EQ and compression can make it sound good enough anyway? Most of the other Midi based boxes seem to be geared towards backing modules for keyboard players with built in ROMplers.
