So, my cousin bought an MPC 4000 like 6 years ago when he was doing pretty well financially. He never really learned how to use it and left it sitting in storage for the past 5 years. Anyway, he was willing to sell it to me, and today it arrived.
First thing, I plugged in my headphones and tapped the pads to hear: nothing.
I was able to browse through the samples, and hit the "audition" button and hear sounds, but still nothing on the pads, although on the sensitivity tab under pad assign, it does detect them, so I don't think they're dead. Likewise on the main screen, when you hit any of the pads, you can see the "IN" meter go up and down.
I adjusted a bunch of settings relating to output, connected the MPC through the 1/4" TRS jacks on the back, the same results, it only made noise when I hit the audition button, or hit record and start, the metronome was audible. I notice when the metronome is on, the "OUT" meter has signal.
I decided to take it apart to see if I could find a lose wire or something. I started with just the top case. I didn't see anything, so I put it back together, only this time, when I turned it on, it stopped detecting both of the drives.
I called my Cousin to ask him if he knew anything. He said he hadn't used it in a long time, but when he did use it, he used the XLR outs, not the TRS ones... that's the only difference he could think of.
Then I opened up the bottom. Nothing loose, nothing charred. I swapped a few different hard-drives into it. Most of them it detects with a "UNKNOWN VOLUME", but will fail to detect the CD-rom. I switched out the ribbon cable, and more than one CD-ROM as well, so far only one of these hard-drive, and cd-rom combos (that aren't the factory ones) are detected. Although its problematic because it still says "UNKNOWN VOLUME", and it's not really a hard-drive I wanna forfeit to the MPC.
What the hell did I do?
I guess one at a time... Any ideas of why the pad's would be detected, but not make any sound? I don't think the port is completely dead, you can hear the Metronome through it.
Why won't the system detect the factory hard-drive and CD-Rom combo now?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to make fun of, I might deserve it. Thanks!
