yeah, i`ve done this alot in the mp (at least on the 25k)
but i am kind of drum fanatic and enjoy it more to fiddle with a drumbeat (even if it takes a few hours) until it sounds the way i like it (lot of ghostnotes, tuning, envelope curves, filter, shifting back and forth..., you know that sh!t

) and then start adding stuff on the top... for me the groove is the most important thing (my own groove) and i have better results when this sh!t bangs and could stand alone w/o instruments
the other thing is i have a great collection of drumsamplers: mpc3k, sp1200, studio 440 where i only have floppy disks and doing drums on them...
but anyway...
for me abletons biggest advantage is to browse through samples/loops while a beat is going...
to be honest: i know live since version 3 and had not done more than fire up loops with it... i mean all this maxforlive, audioracks etc. is a pretty nurdstuff and sounds so crappy IMHO and i have never seen a video about it with good music
maybe i am getting old, but i was way more impressed by 90s electronic with "simple" gear than that ableton live crap music at least the most of them)
i mean, i`ve watched a king britt vid on youtube where he does ableton live performances...
compare this to his great stuff from the mpc2k time
i have reason 5 also and it seems far more on the point...
