mv 8000/8800

unfortunately there is no cursor scrolling across the sample when adjusting end and start points, it'd be killer if there was...as far as being on teh MV, just now I'm starting to break into slowly. trying to figure out quanitze settings

turtle slow load and save time I can deal with, got 30GB ssd laying around I might drop in there see if it improves anything, doubt it will but wont hurt to try

I bought a 100gb HD, with 7300 speed, or something like that. (Don't know much about computer stuff, but I did my homework and found the right one from the mv forum.) It did speed things up, but not that much to be honest.
To me, the slow loading isn't that big of a deal. I started with an S-550 sampler. Took two disks and a hell of a long time to load. When fully loaded you didn't have much either. Computers have spoiled us, but having a hardware device is well worth the wait to me. Each his own. When I die I will haunt the mo/fu who touches my MV.
As for the curser, that is indeed a bummer. But not one that you can't work around. The Mp1k didn't have a curser untill 2xl afterall. It really becomes second nature. Muscle memory or something kicks in as you move from instrument to instrument. You really learn to take advantage of the before and after buttons. Or whatever you call them. These were added to 2xl as well. Many of the JJ functions come right from the MV.

wudsiba any improvement in save/load times is good, not having scrolling cursor in wave form is not a deal breaker like you said cuz this machine compensates for it in many different areas.

about JJ functions coming from the MV gotta say hitting shift + cursor was a pleasant surprise when zoomin on sample

patch preview function has to be one of my favorite

check mv nation.. I think there are a few hard drive threads where people switched and tried different drives. I somehow think I read that SSD drives dont do anything to speed up anything beyond a 7400rpm 8mb cache drive... also look into max drive size limits because I forget the low amount... If I had to guess, I would guess 137 gigs.

Some people tried switching the HDD for a 32gb cf card, and I dont think that made much difference... but apparently a dvd reader cd burner combo drive works fine and the mv can read dvd disks.

when booting the mv, skipping the autoload (is it f5 ??) is a great feature.

last but not least... dont do checkdisk or disk fix utilities on the mv HDD through your usb port....

On my 8000, I swapped out the decrepit stock 40GB 4200RPM 3.5" HD for a 160GB 7200RPM laptop HD with a 40 to 44 pin adapter and switched to an Ultra ATA/133 rounded IDE cable. Even though I have a 160 GB HD, the MV only allows 127GB when formatted with no partitions. IMHO... Speeds are a little better when loading and saving projects with 7200RPM HD and since the laptop HD is smaller there is less heat. But boot times don't change since the OS isn't stored on the HD.

I tried this also. The card reader does work (but not at blazing speeds) on it's own but not together on the same IDE cable with the HD. It's one or the other that the MV will allow you to use even with slave/master jumpers on the card reader.
The MV8800 reads DVDs. The MV8000 only reads CDs unless you swap it out for a Panasonic UJDA-770 CD burner/DVD reader. I bought one for $8 off of eBay and installed it pretty easily. I was able to load & play samples from my Computer Music Magazine 8GB DVDs with no problem.

I bought one of those dvd drives too, but haven't installed it yet. Makes me nervous as there's no video showing how to do it. Any pointers?
On the HD: Its a 120 gb hd with 7200 speed. It does make it quite a bit faster, it just doesn't make it fast.
On the whole though, I really love this instrument. Incredably overlooked in my opinion. I was really nervous about buying it, as I already had an Mp, but it really turned out to be a steal. Wolfgang, my MV, is now the centerpiece of my studio.
There's so much under the hood on this thing that there's always something to learn if you get bored. Its got a vocoder that I have yet to try.

it's pretty easy to swap out. the only pain i remember was all the screws on the bottom cover and the small ass screws from the old cd drive that I needed a Radio Shack phillips (cross tip) jeweler's screwdriver to remove.

i think people use the preview to and from buttons to make up for the lack of a scrolling cursor.

Good lookin out my man. I'll let you know if I attempt it. Probably after Christmas. I have a ton of old sample dvds from magazines dating back several years. If I get it working, I may get a subscription. I love the idea of getting a new slew of samples every month.

I accidentally reconfigured something while I had my MV hooked up to my computer. Screwed everything up. I'm still afraid to hook my MV up to my pc because of it.

Absolutely. Once you get use to using these features it really becomes second nature.

I accidentally reconfigured something while I had my MV hooked up to my computer. Screwed everything up. I'm still afraid to hook my MV up to my pc because of it.

to get to the dvd drive spot... you have to open the plate... then remove some sh!t that blocks where the drive is mounted and then you can unmount the drive. If I remember correct, it has a plate that covers the dvd drive itself... it is straight forward. Mini screw driver bits might help, but a driver with exchangeable bits might work fine if you have a real small philips. It isn't hard to do, it is straight forward.... just keep the screws from the bottom plate separate from the ones that bolt in the dvd drive. It should only take you 2 hours with the 58 screws you need to remove.


as for the USB computer thing... there is nothing to be afraid of as long as you dont mess with the my computer properties.... when you see the view files pop up, what you are seeing is simply an emulation of what looks like a standard file system... this isn't the case though. The MV only shows you some stuff, and it hides how the directories and files are really set up. This is to protect your mv from getting messed with because of the odd archaic method of which things are structured within the MV for it to function.... I'm sure you noticed how everything is sorted by date and you can't change it....


when connected via USB, just explore the folder for your songs.... and dump samples into your sample folder.... dont mess around with other stuff. I suggest doing your deleting from within the MV... you can get away with doing it via USB, but I dont suggest it. If you want to do backups of the entire drive... I suggest taking the drive out, mounting it in a PC... and cloning the drive.

That rear USB1.1 connection is slow as **** when transferring files.
I tried to defrag my MV's old 40GB drive from my VAIO laptop and it took 5 hours. Never again will I do that!

Thanks for the tips, personally I do not see a benefit in putting big hard disks inside these machines due to slow transfer speeds of usb 1.0 IMO And thought of pulling out the hard drive to do backups dont sit well, call me lazy there's gazillion screws

its suks ass fixing broken buttuns on the mv, hope u dont deal wit that
