what's exactly teh benefit of doing long way and typing up name letter for letter from hardware as opposed to using computer keyboard and doing the same task in 2 seconds
that's some masochist shit

Yea I know, I have to agree..but it's something I wish I could do even though I know going to the mouse, looking at the monitor, clicking in the field and then typing would definitely be faster than how trying to type a name on the hard are could ever be done. For me, just that little action of having to look away from the hardware feels clunky and breaks my flow badly (but not always...). It's one Reason I never smoothly use Reason until recently (I got a P4 the same time I got the Ren and it lets me stay on the hardware almost entirely, but it too doesn't have direct track renaming, but its the only reason I have to look away from the hardware. It's seems the more direct hardware functionality I get the more I want to do everything from it I guess). It's less about the keyboard and more having to reach for the mouse and look up constantly at the monitor.
Now that I think about it, I wish they would make the Sequence, Track and Instrument section in the software mimic the classic layout found on the hardware screen (lay it out horizontally and put the project info section underneath it--or give users the option of "new" or "classic" layout or something). For me, looking up to the monitor and having to reorient my eyes to a layout that differs and trying to zero in on the field I want to modify breaks up the flow. If it were laid out in a consistent manner I may have less of a problem zeroing in because my eyes are already familiar with where to expect find everything from working on the hardware for however many straight minutes/hours, etc....
Anyway, I agree they could probably never create a faster way to type on the hardware, but I think they could at least implement a away to
initiate a rename from the hardware (it highlights the field in the software as was previously mentioned by a prior post and presents a rename window on the hardware) and then allows you to start typing with your keyboard, press enter and the name on the hardware screen refreshes with the new name. This way I could stay focused on the MPC screen and never really have to look at the monitor or make a lateral reach for the mouse.
