4000 early struggles

So I got a 4000. I love the internal workflow. However Ak.sys is a POS which I'm sure you all know. I don't want to use it for anything other than copying sounds to the MPC. However, I can't even copy 1 folder of 15 files to the MPC with that thing. It randomly disconnects about halfway through on different files each time. The one time I did manage to get a whole folder there when auditioning in the MPC they sounded like they were highpassed and distorted. They were corrupted I guess. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using ak.sys on Win7 ult with XP Mode. It's a white 4000 with CD drive, 80g HD, analog outs.

I tried burning a CD-R of the files I wanted to copy to it and that appears to be a no go as well. I can load them in to the memory but not just copy the folders.

AKsys doesn't work well with XP mode. Your best bet is to run it in a virtual machine like Fusion.

It works fine for me on a Mac using XP.

is there a better choice than XP Mode for windows? Ideally I'd like to use my PC.

VMWare or any other virtual machine client that allows you to install Win XP will usually work.

I have XP dual-booted on my PC just for this purpose.

It will install to Windows 7 32 bit as the lack of a 64 bit USB driver is the reason it won't run on Windows 7 64 bit. It still tends to crash if you try to move too many files at once, but not to the extent that it happens in XP Mode running on Windows Ultimate 64 bit.

Personally I think I'm just going to keep an old P4 PC plugged in again to use for Aksys and it's floppy for my Ensoniq editor app.

I couldn't find my old disc but I 'found' a 200MB XP install by looking around.

Sounds like an nLite stripped down install, nice. Even with stock XP I used to get it down to using 35MB at startup.

I bought an old laptop for a very low price. It is on the high end running XP. I use that for all of my old gear and I do not update it or connect it to the internet. Got it for $50.
Aksys works fine on it....however I notice that it crashes if you try to transfer too many files. So it is not perfect and you can still have a headache now and then with the program.
While going through Aksys drama when I couldn't figure it out at first, I just took the time to remove the hard drive from the MPC and I put it in my old desktop. I just sorted everything the way I wanted and created a tremendously tidy file structure with all of my samples. When I was done I realized that the only slow part was the unscrewed of the MPC. I am glad I took the time to do it. Wouldn't want to keep doing it but it was a time saver in the long run.
I did this with my z4 also.
Once I figured it out I haven't used aksys anymore. I like the work flow on the machines. They are so easy to use.

can happily report the vmware method works MUCH better. I transferred 2 folders and both appears to working correctly. However my headphone out sounds weak and highpassed. I haven't tried a 2nd pair of headphones but has anyone else experienced that? Even with the headphone out volume all the way it's as if there is no bass.

try starting a new thread about your headphone issue, maybe some one will have an answer?
