also, anyone know about an alternate loop mode type feature?

Yeah, with Micro Edit you can shift notes and samples from each bar, so if a snare is a bit off, you can adjust it there.

Alternate Loop feature is just looping a sample by hitting a pad once, unlike the MPC where you have to hold the pad down or sequence it to let a loop play infinite. But the 500 can do it though.

i dont quite follow what your saying with the alternate loop mode feature,

on my 1k or 2500 with jjos2xl i can make part of the sample do a crossfade loop over in trim mode, then i take it into program mode and adjust my release time to around 80 ish so it repeats until the next note in the mute group is hit and cuts it off... without holding the pad down for the whole time. i can just tap it and the second portion will loop continuously before it slowly fades out with the release.

can the 606 do this?

i wish it had some sort of grid edit, i hate using the step edit in my mpc.

Nah ni66a, you in shitz creek :fku:

Jk   The MV does that and has grid edit, but the 606 is like a 303 but with a screen, wave edit, and mute groups and a few other goodies to keep you busy but editing samples like that you won't find on the box alone, thats where the USB connectivity comes in where you can have a DAW interwine with the 606. You can edit stuff in any program and send it to the 606. Remember it can be a controller and a stand-alone sampler at the same time.

   thanks man, **** MV. i want one of those again now, but i think im gonna cop a 4k maybe if i sell my 2500 sometime.

that really blows about loop edit though.

i could live without grid edit, but the **** loop mode, i use that shit everytime.

pitch tuning kills it for me, i sold my 303 but am planning on getting a 404 for sampling. the sp SOUND is great but the limitations (no pitch, timestretch, dirt poor sequencer) make it hard to make beats on. i'm getting a 404 and am gonna run the sounds into my mpc.

i guess they do have pitching, its just maybe not as reliable as the one on the mpc, ie, no semitones.

Hey, I'm another SP-606 user. As my first sampler it was a great learning tool. Pitch was never even a problem until I started collecting other samplers. If you've got an ear for tones or a guitar tuning pedal pitch shift is needless. Just find another sample in the same or relative key.

The limitations in SPs actually make writing music simpler & faster, there's dudes with SP-303s & 404s who can turn out incredible bits of music in an hour or two. The key is to look at the SP series as workaround machines. By giving limited particulars (ie- polyphony, pitch) & loads of extras (40 FX, sound card, DAW controller) you really start thinking about the 'why' & 'how' of your workflow. Resampling is the key.

I've tried messing around with an MPC500 & I can't do anything near what I can with my SP. Maybe I just need more practice on it, maybe I've been trained by the SP to work in a particular manner. Either way, the SP-606 is slept on gold.

The song in my signature block is an all SP-606 joint.

SHAMELESS PLUG TIME:
Ill Green & I are members on the SP forums, we can both vauch for there being some dope producers on it. A bunch of members all pitched in to put together one hell of a beat tape. It's all video game sampling & all produced on Roland & Boss SP series samplers. For an idea of what those machines are capable of, check it out here:
http://spforums1.bandcamp.com/

Here's two clips from the tape:

I always look forward to the SP podcast (spcast I think it's called... and I believe there has been 2 so far) .. if there are mixtapes that get released, it would be cool if somebody would post that here in the off topic because from what I have heard (though it hasn't been too much since I am not over on that site) I really enjoy the stuff coming from that corner of the internet.

Ah mate there's always low key tapes being released there, so sorry I can't name the one you're thinking of if this isn't it.

A quick scan through here may help: http://sp-forums.com/viewforum.php?f=5

@Mr Debauch: Thanks for the kind words in 2 threads! Hopefully there'll be more SP casts in future, I'll get in touch with the guy who was running those soon. Haven't seen him post there in a little while.

im pretty sure the sp forums is mostly roland sp's, but there is a small mv section, and another sampler section if im not mistaken. i joined up over there about a month ago, there's lots of knowledge about them over there.

@unfolding machines, it wasnt a specific tape i was trying to find, i was just wondering/ thought i read over there that you guys had a series of sp beat tapes that were an organized forum effort, so i was just looking for the links to those, would be cool if you knew of a thread where they were all linked up.

im not sure if you know, but there is a forum beat tape over here too. its called symphony sounds, there is 3 volumes, i havent put anything on them, but i know debauch has, you can check them out here. the sidebar has the other two volumes.

On the heading at SP-forums where it says Chat, Board Index and Music. Click Music and it'll take you to a special page where a bunch of SP album covers are. Just click an album to hear whats on it. I have to submit my stuff to that page soon myself.

that sp game beat tape has made me fiend on a sp 404sx now, was waiting for a mpc2500 again but whats th chopping like on it?
User avatar
By damien907 Sat Dec 29, 2012 3:05 pm
chopping on the mpc will be wayy better than the 404sx. there is no waveform on the 404s, theres a few videos on youtube on how to do it, but i cant find them right now. if do ill link them here, but you might wana take a look if your serious about getting one.

the 606 would be way easier for chopping and it also has mute groups, something that the 404sx lacks. you might think about going that route instead.

there is a little different effects on both machines, but if you dont care so much about that, the 606 would be the obvious choice.

@ill ill check that out for sure, thanks man.
